My other half and I are going on holiday to India shortly and leaving the kids at home with my sis. Looking for recommendations on a travel insurance policy to take out, specifically ref having to curtail our holiday if we need to get back to the kids for an emergency or similar. Added to this is it's a bit of a once every blue moon "blowout" trip: we're flying first class, doing fancy hotels etc., so if we do have to curtail, I'd like to be able to recover the not insignificant costs.

Normally we just do InsureandGo (they do have curtailment on their policy but can't seem to find any detail on it in their policy handbook), but wondering if anyone else can make a recommendation?

Insureandgo made it as difficult as they could for us to claim when my Dad died suddenly a few years back and we had to postpone a holiday and incur a few costs to rearrange.

They dealt with the claim disgracefully, and even returned his original death certificate that they insisted on having, with their notes scribbled on the back.

Sorry OP I don't mean to hijack your thread but I was literally about to ask the same thing!

I'm only doing more digging as I need a new single or annual policy and discovered today that most of them do "wear and tear" basis cover for baggage, which I guess means they give me the secondhand value of the clothes and shoes (which could be MUCH less than they'd cost to replace). I really would prefer "new for old" which Hiscox seem to offer.

But, and it's a big but, virtually every company seems to talk about having proof of purchase to be able to claim. Who on earth keeps the receipts for t-shirts, jeans etc?! I guess I need a company that would for example, accept a photo of all the clothes showing labels etc, as proof of ownership?

Any advice appreciated smile

I just booked with TrueTraveller for some trekking in South America on the basis that (unusually) they will let you take out insurance once you’ve already left the UK and excellent online reviews, plus cover for high altitude

Mind you I haven’t had to claim ...

The first job of any insurer is not to pay out so it's hard to say how 'good' any of them will be. There seems to be a lot of strange one poster moans when it comes to travel insurance reviews so you can never really tell.

I went for LV because they give me more time abroad and they're their own underwriter. Hopefully I'll never have to find out if they're any good.

Do not use anyone backed by AXA, if you need to claim they are bad. My family experienced this last year when my grandmother fell on holiday and had a bleed on the brain, to say they were useless is an understatement, if my parents were not nearby (by complete coincidence) the whole situation would have been life changing for them!

Saying that I doubt many make it easy.

I'm not sure what's strange about posting up personal experiences of using a particular firm in question.

As we are old farts we have always used Globelink as they will cover quite a lot of existing medical conditions, no idea what they are like to make a claim with as we have never had to.

Bank account? I had to make a curtailment claim last year as a result of family illness, they were absolutely brilliant (Axa policy).

Have a look at this old thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... I think you will find that Staysure ticks all the boxes. Tell them exactly the type of cover you want and I`m sure they will include it,even if you have a health issue.
