Yes, and then some! Food on the go is part of NY culture - there are a myriad of places everywhere, more so than London I think. All sorts of cuisines, although bacon is much less ubiquitous, there are plenty of better alternatives for breakfast/brunch. Bagel is the way to go!

Thanks, I was hoping there would be similar options in Manhattan smile

Scotty’s Diner is a short walk away from the Roosevelt (nice hotel, I liked it there when I stayed there in 09). Their breakfasts are great.

Pershing Sq is close too and does a great breakfast. Not sure they do takeaway though.

What's NY like in February? Looking to go away at half term and considering it instead of a bit of sun perhaps.

Typically bloody cold! Somewhere between 0 and 10 degrees would be the norm, but can be much colder, or much warmer. Feb can also bring snow, some times lots of it.

Really doesn't make any difference to what's going on, everything is open and the sights are still the sights - perhaps the Highline is not as good as normal, but it's still open. Shorter days obviously, so less daylight hours to see things outdoors, but not many things close for winter.

Dress appropriately, pack as late as you can before leaving to take into account what the weather forecasts are saying, as they're more accurate than ours in my experience, and you'll be fine.

It's a great place to be, irrespective of the weather - always something amazing to do/see/eat/drink!

HoBo on here lives in/around Hoboken and may be able to offer better advice.
What gave me away?

I moved out of Hoboken in 2012 but have ended up working in Jersey City which is a short walk down the Hudson River.

Hoboken is a fun place to live. There’s only 1 hotel so I assume OP is staying at the W. It’s a nice place and has 2 bars. Hoboken itself has a bunch of places to eat and drink. I’m going to recommend Bin 14 (light food and wine) and Anthony David’s (dinner but bring your own wine). Both places are owned by friends who appreciate wine and food.

Getting into the city should be done by PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson- now you know). This is NJs underground into the city. It’s not properly integrated into the Subway system so you may have to come out of the station and find a subway. It stops in a few places in NJ as well like Jersey city. Weekend and holiday routes are different to week day. A high level summary would be there’s 2 NY destinations, World Trade Center and 33rd street. The 33rd street train gets into the city and turns north up 6th ave after Christopher street.

(This only applies to those staying in NY)For the Statue of Liberty, I’d get the “light rail” tram from the Hoboken train station. Make sure you stamp your ticket on the platform. Otherwise, you get a big fine. A couple of stops later and you are in Liberty Park. Remember, the statue is not a NY attraction, it’s in NJ. Lines on this side of the river should be a lot shorter. There’s also a restaurant, Liberty House, which has half decent food over looking the city.

Another poster said use the ferry instead of PATH. I’d do this once to World Trade Center for the experience. I wouldn’t rely on them because for the most part the terminals aren’t convenient.

Do go to the intrepid museum. Check to see if you get free tickets through HSBC or other banks with a NY presence. My bank gets me into many museums for free. It saves a fortune.

Also, go to meat packing for the high line park. The food vendors will be closed so go to Chealsea Market. Google are buying all the buildings in this area.

Weather at NEw year can swing crazy. I’d plan for -10 to 0 but we have had 18. Another poster asked about February. This one is more consistent. Cold in a way you probably have not experienced before. Brutally cold. Watch the movie “Day after tomorrow” and that’s February. Oh and probably snow. NY doesn’t get hit as bad as where I live now but still gets snow sometimes measured in feet. And, because it’s an island there’s no where to put it other than the river. This means the pavements are a slushie mess

I know you said you aren’t foodies but check if restaurant week is on. If not, still look at lunch menus at the top restaurants. I eat at Jean-George’s on Central Park several times a year as the lunch menu is affordable even though it has 2 or 3 Michelin stars.. If you are a fan of Anthony Bourdain you will know of Eric Rupert who owns ale Bernadin. It’s an excellent sea food restaurant with a great lunch menu. It’s also close to Rockefeller center.

Contrary to popular advice! Do go to Times Square. It’s an experience. Do not eat there though unless you go to Wolfgang’s (for steak but the 33 street location is better) or Juniors cheese cake.

Unless you are a big fan of Mr Robit or the film Big, do not go to cony island in peak season. Off peak there’s no excuse whatsoever.

Off the wall idea................... my wife bought me a flying lesson for $100 dollars. Much to my amazement, I took off and navigated down Jersey shore. I got a great view of the city and the crazy Russian told me my 3 year old and wife were welcome to join for free.

Second crazy idea...........I also did similar in a helicopter.

Incidentally, the term Hobo comes from Hoboken because homeless people riding trains were heading to NYC and the last stop was Hoboken. Hence they were heading to Hoboken. Also, the station was recently in the news because a train failed to stop. The station is a dump. You can briefly glimpse its former grandeur in the ticket office.

Finally, always remember we work here and are trying to get somewhere. Walk like you drive a car. Before stopping to look up, pull to the side. New Yorkers are wonderful people but don’t get in their way!

Had great pizza at Bravo Pizza 5th/E41st. Cheap and freshly cooked, looks like a dive but the best pizza I have had. Loads of places to eat generally, no way to go hungry and rhe portions are huge.

Loads to see, I had a couple of hours and did a short route around 5th Avenue, United Nations, Patrick’s Cathedral, Trump Tower, Rockefeller, NYPL.

What most people seem to ignore is how loud NYC actually is at all hours. Car horns seem to have been created for this city. Heard more in 4 days than the rest of my life.

I spend a lot of time in NYC. I am still not used to the noise and the car horns, and the general grime. The subway is filthy and feels unsafe due to some very dodgy people and I will pretty much avoid it at all costs. The city can be brutally cold in winter and in the summer the temperature can get really oppressive, and all the rubbish in the streets rots resulting in the whole of Manhattan being overwhelmed by a disgusting stench.

I think it is a great place for a long weekend, but now that I spend a couple of months at least per year there, my enthusiasm is very firmly in check.

Sorry but that’s rubbish
The subway is safe, those ‘ undesirables’ are just ordinary folk, it is not the 1970’s
Never feel afraid to use the subway in normal hours, if early hours then like all large cities you need to use common sense , don’t get on a carriage alone, and I’m sure pick pockets are abound, like all cities
And the whole of manhattan does not stink at all in the summer, hot yes, Some smells some places, but not the whole of manhattan, you seem to have something against NY to be honest to exaggerate so much?

My experiences from spending a lot of time in NYC. You have your own, which are different. Dismissing what I said is both rude and ignorant.

I based mine on living in the city for the last 4 years, day in day out. sorry, but the subway is not dangerous and the whole city does not stink every day in the summer, that’s not an opinion, it’s a fact.
You seemed to have totally exaggerated your experience and for some reason are now in denial .

I don't want to get into an internet argument with you. I have had some scary moments on the subway and smelt some very bad smells in Manhattan.

It's still a great city, I will be there over Christmas and New year.

All the best to you.

Barcelona..... stinks in places.

London.... stinks in places. Walk down the Strand on a hot summers day.... pure faeces.

Doesn’t detract from them as being fantastic cities. IMO.

NYC is my favourite city I’ve been to. The only place that I can remember that has almost brought me to tears when leaving.

It’s incredible.

Couldn't agree more.... I've been using the NYC subway to get around all over New York for more than a decade and would class it as one of the best I've used Worldwide, certainly no worse than the London underground.

I also hate leaving the City, it just has something about it!

This thread has got me thinking about NYC. I am going to try harder to appreciate it when I am there through December and January. The honest truth is I had come to think of it as a bit of a sthole, frankly, and when I am back there I am going to make an effort to see it more positively.

I think over-familiarity can cause this to some extent. When I used to visit years ago I truly loved the place, but spending much more time there in the last few years has made me complacent, I suppose. Time to reset and revisit with fresh eyes!

Did all the tourist stuff, pretty cool place.

Seeing Cuba Gooding JR in Chicago was kinda weird but fun.
