Off to USA/Canada for 3 weeks in January.

Last time I went I used my Virgin Atlantic Amex and got absolutely bum raped with charges for daring to use my card in the country they brought me too......

I understand there are some card companies that are a bit more forgiving, but a quick google didn't find me them.

Anyone know whats best?

I don't really like cash, as I loose things too easily!

Cheers

Halifax card doesn’t charge anything and also get a slightly better rate. That’s the one I use when I’m abroad with no problems.

Tandem or Aqua - both have the same rates / fees (none) as Clarity but pay 0.5% cashback.

Halifax for credit.
Starling for debit.

If you can get both, no point in not having both as Starling is free, has no conversion charges and a £500 daily withdrawal limit.

I use a Clarity card too - works perfectly.

OP - you might find this thread useful, as some people there have also tried and tested a few good options.

I'll second this (use mine a lot) but beware it's a pre-paid card so doesn't work in a lot of petrol stations in the US or Europe. Also some airlines have stopped accepting it in flight.

Revolut debit card and a Halifax Clarity credit card. Job jobbed.

Now if someone could come up with an easy way of paying for petrol/gas in the USA. On another thread someone said the Revolut card works if you put your zip as 99999. Anyone tried this?

That hasn’t worked for some years for UK credit cards. Is Revolut different?

Curve has quite a low fair usage policy on 0% FX. Plus it only happens on weekdays - weekends is full price!

I'll just repeat myself...

No idea why anyone goes for a Clarity for regular CC spending if you could get cashback instead?

Last summer I tried zero's and nine's, my usual go to ZIP 90210 (Beverley Hills!) and also my cousins "real" ZIP in Santa Barbara and none of those worked with the Revolut. I also had issues in Europe.

Just to clarify, when I filled up and paid in store I had no problem but in the US and Europe when you have to pre pay it won't work. That's an issue on Sundays in Europe where pre pay is the only way to get petrol unless on an Autoroute.

I understand that is because it's a pre load card it can't validate your balance before giving you fuel, i.e. you might have $10 balance but pre authorise the pump to $20 meaning you can't pay the the fuel you have pumped, makes sense to me.

No, it's a fair point. I suppose the Clarity card has been out a long time now, and probably people (like me) who use it for holiday use only can't be bothered swapping!

The Aqua card has a fee on cash withdrawals - 3% / £3 minimum which is something to watch out for.

I had a similar issue in Sweden before I had a Swedish bank account - they helpfully solve this by taking 1000sek from the card and then "refund" the difference once filled up. Gave me a bit of a shock when I filled up twice in a day and thought I had been scammed when I checked my balance later that day!

The thing to look at with the credit cards with no fees is the FX rates you get. We had an AmEx card with no transaction fees but doing a side by side check with Revolut it shows we were paying a 3-4% higher FX rate.

Very true BUT if you pay by Amex or Halifax Clarity or whatever there's no way of knowing the forex rate until after the event.

Exactly, where with Revolut you can live on the app.
