Whose had a decent bit of grub in NYC recently? Havent been for about 3 years so keen to hear any recent tips on decent fine dining, lunch spots, food trucks or junk food. I've been to most of the tourist traps already so any fresh ideas welcome

Went for New Year, fast/junk/bar food was what we had - suited us fine.

Lattitude Bar (Times Square area) Burger kebab was brilliant.
The Meatball Shop (Hells Kitchen) Superb meatball sandwiches
New York Burger Co (Chelsea) Top notch food, service a bit sloppy
Dead Rabbit Grog (Financial district) Lovely choice of pub food, recommend the grilled cheese

Dead Rabbit is great. It was voted best bar in the world a couple of years running.

McSorleys on E 7th St is a fun bar with a lot of history.

There’s a belting tapas bar in Meat Packing that is right at the end of the High Line, but I can’t remember its name for the life of me. It’s really long and narrow and has amazing food

North Square at Washington Square Hotel. Always excellent and not ridiculously priced. And just up from Bleecker, so plenty of bars and music venues.

NYC has more than its fair share of Michelin starred restaurants.

Eleven Madison Park is excellent if a little pricey. It was voted best restaurant in the world right before they closed it to renovate. When they reopened recently they didn’t have enough time to get reviewed sufficiently to retain the crown. I have been before and after renovation and it’s an experience. If you do go be sure to go on the kitchen tour. Also, I go for lunch because it’s a 4 hour investment and if I went for dinner if fall asleep. Finally, don’t expect to leave sober. The final course is a little heavy on the alcohol. Location as the name suggests.

If you are looking for Michelin Stars on a relative budget then check out lunch menus. I’ve been to Le Bernadin several times for lunch. It’s the same food but half the price. On one occasion, I followed Eric Ripert for a couple of blocks on his way to his restaurant by coincidence. He then came out from the kitchen and toured the tables. Located near Rockefeller.

Jean-George’s is another great place for lunch. You have to wear a jacket here. I once saw a person in casual clothes and wondered why he got a pass. It was Jean-George. Food is excellent as you would expect. Location is South West corner of central, park in the Trump building.

The best sushi I’ve had was at Sushi Yasuda having taken the omakase option. I think this was before the head chef quit and Boudain boycott. Location is near grand central

I like Wolfgang’s steak off 34th street. Others say Keens or Peter Lugers. I’ve not done Keens (to my recollection) but Peter Lugers was very good but not the best and it’s a pain to get to.

My kids like Shake Shack, Wagamama chipotle.

I think it’s now Dos Caminos.

In the same area, The standard hotel has a beer garden in Summer. It’s well hidden but worth finding as they show the football. The Gansevort hotel had an interesting way of getting around the smoking ban when it came in. The roof top bar roof retracted completely. I’ts been 10 years since I either smoked or drank in that bar though.

Around the corner was Buddha Bar. They used to have a glass enclosure in the middle of the bar area which was open for smokers. It was an odd experience to go to the glass box to smoke.

There’s a bar called Revel on little West 12th street. It’s nice, small and calm. It also has no back wall.

I’ve had good food at Fig and Olive on the same street as Revel. Don’t forget Chelsea Markets in meatpacking. You can get a wide variety of food including some good lobster sandwiches.

Just around the corner from the Flat iron building is Eaterly. It’s an upscale food market where you can get food quickly. And on a similar vain, if you want quick food near Central Park there’s a Whole Foods in the basement of the Time Warner building. It’s grocery store Amazon bought recently. They have decent hot and cold buffet bars.

The MOMA restaurant isn't bad, either of the P.J. Clarks restaurants are nice and do decent food and beer. There's so many options, the speakeasy's are fun, you won't starve.

I am in NYC at the moment, had dinner last night at Tony Di Napoli, close to Times Square, and it was excellent. Huge portions, expect to pay about $60 each with a couple of drinks.

Tonight, just back from Bobby Van's Steakhouse. We visited the one just off Wall Street with a Groupon deal. Came to about $250 for the two of us. That was just 2 mains, 2 sides and a bottle of wine, but the steaks are colossal so that's really all you need. I had 'filet oscar', which is a 14 oz fillet minion with crabmeat, spinach and potato. Mega!

ETA the Groupon reduced the bill by about $65, so well worth doing that.

Shhhhhh.
Despite having a star it is still very under the radar and notably significantly cheaper than even most run of the mill sushi places here - especially if choosing their set price menu offerings.
It is indeed phenomenal - I try to go there regularly. My other go to place is sushi katsuei in park slope.

I will post up some of my other suggestions (none of which are near times squared or remotely touristy) when I get a minute.

Been to a few steak houses, Bobby van, keens, STK, Peter Lugers, Ruth Chris and Wolfgang’s, Wolfgang’s is stand out the best, best in flavour and atmosphere ( park and 34th restaurant )

You must goto k town, best fried chicken ever at turntable chicken, add some kimchi and slaw and you have a great cheap meal ( it’s fun to find it to, it’s not at street level)
Can’t recommend a specific Korean bbq place, tried a few all we’re very good.

BBQ, , American style, just about done them all in the city, incl blue smoke, the worst was mighty Quinn, but for the best you have to head out to Brooklyn, red hook area for hometown bbq, go on a Friday or sat night for live music, food is first come first served, when they are out of meat that’s it for the night ( the vitemease wings and brisket is my fav)

Pizza, for me johns on bleaker, again part food part ambiance with all the scratched messages in the wood.

Peruvian chicken and empanadas at poipoi won’t cost the earth but washed down with a pitcher or 2 of sangria is always welcome

For a total meat blow out then all you can eat Brazilian steak house Forgo de chao will meat your needs ( see what I did there;) )

You have to hit a ramen joint at one point, I’d say the original ippudo or the newer momosan depending on your location, make sure you get some bao buns for appetisers, ippudos are the best

Thai is not so good in nyc ( or at least I’ve not been successful in getting top Thai food) but if you find yourself in the upper east side then ‘up thai’ is the best I’ve had here

Joe Shanghai’s do the best soup dumplings in town, get the pork for max flavour

Shake shack for burgers and chick fillet for chicken burgers

Sons of thunder do the best poke I’ve had, also a bit strangely the best hot dogs too!

So many great great places, but like the rest of the world, so many crap ones too, really try to head out to recommended places on the thread, Better make the effort to travel to get good food rather than a random pick near by.

The best app is either Yelp for general reviews, or urban daddy to be specific on what you are looking for

Damn, I’m hungry now!

The River Cafe under Brooklyn Bridge is phenomenal. Spectacular views as well.

Pricey, jacket required. Book well in advance.

I agree with a couple of the suggestions:

spotted pig- went there for lunch, nice food, very nice location/ neighborhood. also had helena christensen at bar eating lunch and david lynch a couple of tables away!

the river cafe- great location, amazing views of the bridge/ Manhattan at night. but as mentioned you need to wear a jacket for dinner. but that illusion was ruined for me when I noticed the guy next to me whilst wearing a jacket, was also wearing old man reebok trainers...... then after dinner, handed his jacket back in at reception that had been borrowed for dinner.

I'm afraid my experience isn't recent (Jan 2012), but we ate a pizza place that had a ceiling like the 16th Chapel. It was brilliant. I'm sure others will be able to help with the name.

We also at a bbq place a bit off the beaten track heading towards the USS Intrepid. Very quiet but food was great. Sorry I can't remember the name!

We only went for five days and it was very cold. Never got above 0C, but we had a great time there.
