We are a tad late in booking our summer hols, I am looking at renting a villa for two families (total 8 people, 4 adults and 4 children, oldest 6 youngest is 3). Likely to be around the med. Happy to hire a car etc.

Any recommendations on villas that you have stayed in or best rental companies to deal with? The search is mind boggling...

Thanks in advance.

Do you need to be walking distance to restaurants/beach/shops, and all in one or ok to be next door to each other? Would cut down the choices a fair bit.

I've found many/most of the desirable places around the Med have standalone villas or villa complexes nearby. The limitation tends to be budget and availability. But AirBnB, James Villas, HomeAway all decent starting points which I've used.

Have used Villa Plus and James. Always good.

We have been to Calpe a few times and used a local Company, Abahana Villas 2 or 3 times.
They cover a few other Towns in the Area.
We always go out of Season.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Would likely be around the Med somewhere, Majorca, Ibiza, Southern Spain etc. Certainly don't need to be in walking distance to shops, beach, restaurants etc but a short car journey (less than 15/20 mins) would be preferable.

Thanks again

Definitely look at James Villas, they can sort out flights as well.

I used these people 3 times on the trot without any problems:

I was 'turned on' to Mallorca via PH a few years ago. I'd never been before and am now quite a fan - not massively expensive, very friendly natives and great towns and beaches.

Used HomeAway several times. Quite a good search, with lots of features you can filter on and also the ability to specify both number of peole and minimum number of rooms. In map mode the search re-runs when you move, which is handy - but does seem to randomly add properties if you move it just a little bit.

The list updates as you move the map to include villas in the area on the map and if you zoom in, it lists those on your zoom.

Most of these sites have been bought up:
Holiday Lettings and Housetrip - Trip Advisor
HomeAway/VRBO/Owners Direct all the same

Others
Clickstay
AirBnB
Rentalia
Spain-Holiday.com

This is in the middle of nowhere Spain but is huge and cheap though you may need Google Spanish - http://casaruralelolmo.com/

Try this though.

Run a search/pick map/zoom in a bit (but still giving you some room to work with - say 20-30 results). No move the map a couple of mm - and see new flags appear in the middle of the map!

As an example search for London/first week in August/12 people. Zoom in once and you have a single flag up by Kensal Green, next to Queen's Park station but nothing north west of that at either Brondesbury Park or Willesden Green stations. Zoom in a second time...and flags appear near both those other stations.

Clearly just some 'feature' of their search, which is otherwise one of the best. Just remember to give it a little jiggle to make sure you aren't missing anything.

Our own villa sleeps 8 on Lefkas Island, Greece.

Available most weeks in September and October still.

Beautiful place, incredible views, great pool.

Same here. We’ve used them 5 times in the last 4 years and each time they have been excellent and the properties are always very clean and as described.

Same. Always been fantastic. Doing it again this year.

Flights can be had cheaper direct with airlines, but obviously not part of the package so there is a loss of certain protections related to packages.
