I see ' who is skiing ' threads - are there any sailors / sailing holiday types here on PH ? I've looked using the search and there is not so much postings.

As a frustrated sailor, I only get on the water occasionally, sometimes through work but more often on a charter. Tends to be a boys holiday but either way at least a week afloat a year is what I need.
I've two weeks booked for Turkey this year - four guys on a Bav' 46 out of Gocek in 10 days - and two families on a FP42 Catamaran later in August.

Anyone else here?

Croatia in a few weeks time. I'm going to be skippering this around the islands off Trogir with some old friends.

Which makes a change from spanking about the Thames Estuary instructing hormonally challenged Yoofs most summer weekends in this

Can't wait woohoo

I guess its a case of the grass is greener.... I'd cope happily with the bottom photo !

Two years ago I took a lovely boat from Split for the week in August - but the weather was not on our side frown
A little concerned on the temperature (air and Sea !) of Turkey mid May I admit.

You might not cope quite so happily if you saw just how much fuel teenage kids can burn in a day when I let them have a go... eek

Downside with Croatia is although the weather has been great every time we've been there's often not enough wind for proper sailing. Last time we chartered we had 10 days of glassy flat calm out of the fortnights holiday.

That’s better than Rain !!

Only time we have been to Croatia is also the only time we have been rained off for a day !

We’re doing the Fastnet in August, so have a few qualifying races before then to get the off shore miles requirement.

Myth of Malham May bank holiday weekend, followed by the Morgan Cup in June. Might need to do another one if they don’t gives us enough miles.

Next year we’re planning to do the Middle Sea race, and then the ARC. So a nice long delivery trip from Southampton to Malta, then on to the Canaries.

We're planning to sail to the Isle of Skye from Largs in July. Will probably go via the Crinan Canal to save time. Its often nice to spend a night in the Crinan, but needs must.

Will take around four days to get there via Coll and planning to return via Tobermory and Craobh Haven. Might meet the West Highland Yachting Week on the way back. They have some right good parties :-)

Anyone looking for a week's charter still this summer? We have availability most weeks over the school summer hols (September pretty much full though). So if you fancy a trip in July or August to the Ionian, message me..... Special PH discounts apply.

is there any good sailing for complete beginners to be had in april?

looking for ideas for a week away. greece has been suggested which doesn't really grab me as a destination. i would be more interested if it could be combined with a short sailing trip. we would both enjoy it, but spending the entire trip afloat wouldn't be as easy sell to the OH. it doesn't have to be the med, anywhere other than the US really [visa issues].

Have you considered a dingy sailing holiday - based in a hotel not afloat, plus you will learn a lot more a lot quicker.
Most of the Med based ones don't open until May, but if you fancy long haul Wildwind in Mauritius are open all year, mainly focused on two hulls but they do have a few monos.
Make sure any centre is RYA approved and ask if instruction is included or costs extra.

Mauritius is about 6.5hrs direct so doable, but a dinghy holiday wouldn't suit.

From what I read it's a tad early in the year for sailing, maybe later on, i'll keep watching the thread.cheers.

The BVI's would be ideal, easy(ish) sailing and navigation, plenty of shore based hotels for the odd night and you can fly in via most Caribbean islands using LIAT but don't trust them with your car keys in the bag! Sunsail are good there.

Greece destinations vary a lot. Possibly the Ionian region might be best for a beginner but you'll need qualifications to charter.

I'm doing my Yachtmaster Coastal exam (and prep week) in April out of Cowes. First time on a yacht in about 7 years so I hope it all comes flooding back! Had to get it done before my mileage log starts 'expiring' for the purposes of YM recognition, was hoping to make the mileage to qualify for Offshore, but with no access to a boat any longer that was tricky! I now dinghy sail regularly so am looking forward to seeing how that experience will affect my big boat sailing.

Then with some paperwork behind me I'm hoping to take a charter in the autumn. Was thinking about Preveza/Lefkas as a starting point, since one of the crew gets very sea sick so the shelter of Lefkada looks like a good bet. Also really fancy a trip to Isles of Scilly and/or the Channel Islands at some point. Would be glad to take recommendations of charter providers for these options.

I often find myself wondering about boat shares also - anyone with experience of that?

what qualifications at a minimum? are these international standard [i'm not uk based]. would these be the same for any type of sailing holiday without a skipper onboard?

my OH would go for sailing no doubt, but we have enough hobbies ongoing to want to undertake extensive training for what might be a 1 or 2 off experience.

After doing the qualifying races and completing the Fastnet last August, this will be a quieter year for me.

No proper racing in 2020, just a few delivery trips... owner of the boat I crew on is doing the Arc Portugal again this year, so I'll do the delivery trip from Plymouth, across the Bay of Biscay to Northern Spain (3 up on a 1st 45, took us 3.5 days in 2018). The owner will then park the boat in Lagos, and I'll pop over from Marbella to do the 3 day regatta they do in early September... another chap that races with us has his boat in Lagos, so should be a good weekend - I did the same regatta last year... it was very relaxed and pretty boozy... great fun, and nice to sail without needing full water proofs.

Early Autumn, we'll be taking both boats from Lagos round Southern Spain and up the East coast. Not sure where they'll end up for the Winter yet.

Then it's a bit of Med cruising in 2021 (possibly including a new off shore race in the Greek Islands), and hopefully the Middle Sea Race in October 2021.

Still hoping to do the Arc in 2021 or 2022... the owner has been taking about a new, bigger boat, so we'll see what happens!

Doing my day skipper out the Solent in March.

Wtf was I thinking, should have remembered I was a fair weather sailor. Or at the very least, a warm weather sailor.

If you want to charter "bareboat" or on "flotilla" (ie without a paid skipper on board), you will need the RYA Day Skipper practical qualification as a minimum.

Don't discount a skippered charter though - can be a great holiday, and will give you a real good feel, for if you want to go on and invest the time in learning and getting qualified.

I'm in the charter industry (based in the Ionian, Greece), so PM me if you want any more info or ask a question here.
