A week a deux in a great little 42DS twin cabin with the GF in August in Turkey. Nailed a bargain on the boat (had her before ) but fk me the flights ? Admittedly School holidays but £600 each ? To bloody Turkey ? ?

Shirt - there are ways around getting your ICC, a route to further Charter adventures, but would no doubt entail having someone on board with you doing an assessment. I know a guy.......

We used him last year to help get two of the guys through there one day assessment ICC at the end of the lads week holiday.
Not at all useful for you in April mind.

You might find a flotilla would help you out but have you done ANY sailing before ?
Also noting the 'No to Dinghies' I am guessing you want a nicer life and yacht? You'll struggle to get access to that unless you pay and take a skipper with you - or qualify up.....

If you want to charter "bareboat" or on "flotilla" (ie without a paid skipper on board), you will need the RYA Day Skipper practical qualification as a minimum.
Is it true that 'some of those people out there' want an ICC but don't recognize a Yachtmaster certificate ?

I think it is all flexible and debatable - ICC is ‘all’ you need. But I’m sure it will also be relatable to where they are, the season and the insurances held biggrin

It does vary from location to location. In the Ionian this season, our Port Police on Lefkada have said they will only be accepting the ICC as proof of competence, so all of our clients (95% from UK) are having to get an ICC (no problem as the RYA will issue one to the holder of an RYA Day Skipper or above ticket).

Personally though, when vetting potential clients, ill be looking for an RYA qualification in addition to the ICC. If someone just has an ICC, ill be checking the levels of experience very carefully, as some places write out ICC's far to easily....

I know someone getting his ICC because nobody in the sailing world understands or recognises a master mariners certificate hehe

According to the self appointed Guardians of Certificates at the RYA the ICC must be renewed every five years because, well because they say so.

Naturally they'll happily take £45 off me for renewal every time because I only learned to sail as a kid some 55 years ago and have both Powerboat and Yachtmaster certificates so obviously am way too incompetent unless I have another bit of expensive officially approved paper to demonstrate I might just about cope with pottering around the Med on a yacht for a couple of weeks...

Or join the RYA (£45/year), and it is free. But the cynical may say this is just a method to boost membership numbers.....

Well,.......

Where does this C-19 put us all eager to get afloat?
Thoughts and theories?

I've a boat held / deposit paid in December for a week in August, Gocek.
I haven't booked the flights and see that the extortionate prices of January have dipped a £100 but still 'steep' considering they may not happen. Will they spike? or fall further..... ?

The Charter Co is doing all it can to say it can be rolled to 2021 etc, and I see others Co's are offering all sorts of boats with all sorts of terms.

Will some of them just close for the season and put them back on the hard?

I could be looking for a second charter after the schools return too..... but there is just no knowing.

Rowan, how is it affecting you - and what is your view from the trenches ?

In case anyone is curious / same predicatment, I messaged a contact out in Gocek who runs some mini charter / sailing courses.

He said:
So situation here at moment is that all bars/Resteraunts closed. No internal or external flights and over 65’s or under 20’s not able to leave house. No travel between provinces without permission from Govt.

Weekend curfew for all from 12 midnight Friday until 12 midnight Sunday each weekend now. Police & Gendarma patrolling quite aggressively for any infractions even my tiny village.

So obviously no charter or private sailing happening at moment.
So what will all the companies do. Difficult to predict but bottom line all about the agreement you signed?

Personally I am not sending reminders to anyone who has just paid a deposit. When they miss the balance payment deadline easy breach of contract issue. Possibly worth paying your balance so then you have some rights.

For my clients who have fulfilled the contracted payments I will offer flexible dates for the future. Anyone that hasn’t paid balance looses deposit. That’s how I’m operating.
It’s likely that Turkey will reopen internal travel around July for Internal tourism and then move back to international around September.
That’s my guess but we all know we don’t-know what may happen next week let alone several months time.

Anyone got the boat bug this years ?
Charters I would guess for the 'independants' as the flotillas and Social distancing / planning an issue....

Reporting in - three days in on a bareboat with GF in Gocek

Pleased to say that it looks like business as usual offshore in the creeks and tavernas
Gocek town seemed a little quiet before we left and EasyJet flight was 70% full - well behaved on the whole, until NBCC the mouth breathers all realised that buying the mini bar meant gassing in to neighbours and rows without having to wear masks too much.....

Looks fantastic, I'd be happy isolating there for a week or two.

I’ve got a week booked in Corfu in a month - very much looking forward to it but slightly nervous about the current CV19 spike in Greece...

She’s steady, sails on her own without autopilot happily, Gennie and air in to drop the temp, big full width stern cabin and bed

Good spotting..... and just the job
