was working at Warton for BAE a few years ago and had a guy over from Czech republic for a few months.

We were staying in lytham, which was bearable.

took this guy out to show him the place where English people who cannot afford a piss up in Czech gomto instead.

As you say the sea front was full of pissed up youths wanting to fight each other, but even better were the traffic lights one road back..

Sat at red light and bloke on motability scooter stopped in the middle of the road and projectile vomitted all over the car in front.

Was very impressive as i saw it spray up to the poor blokes windscreen.

Vile place with no redeeming features.

Sounds like you were on Central drive....fairly tame for that part of my home town.

One area that would definitely benefit from being nuked from orbit.

It's a toilet! I have an Aunty and Uncle who live not far outside Blackpool so we've been hundreds of times over my lifetime and it's always been the same. They never go into Blackpool unless they can really help it and have lived there for years!

Go on to TripAdvisor and find The Royal Vincent hotel.

I have no idea how that level of filth and safety issues has managed to stay open.

A mate booked it for a group of us and it was unbelievable.

Anything above 1 star has to be a fake review.
Ha! I have stayed there for 3 nights for a stag do 12 years ago. By far the worst place I have ever been in and some of the stories from then are enough to turn your stomach.

Just to throw my hat into the ring....

After seeing this thread and thinking 'It can't be that bad?'

I took the Mrs and our toddler for a trip out to Blackpool on Monday as it was due to be sunny and we fancied heading to the coast... I'm happy to say we all had an excellent time!

- The little lad loved playing on the beach / paddling in the Sea (as did I!!!), the beach was clean and dog free
- We went to the Yorkshire Fisheries for lunch (Brilliant food and firendly staff BTW)
- Mooched along the front, went onto the Pier and spent a little time in the penny Arcades

All in all it was a good day out, but doubt I would want to stay into the evening.. there were some sights to behold!

Very fair comment, but you covered just about all the good bits (some might add the Pleasure Beach etc).

The seaside/prom itself is generally good during the daytime, it's just everything is rubbish from 1-2 roads inland.

Spent two weeks there in 1985 when I was 18 with a mate from work. Had a great time with those Northern birds. Loved it and even went to the TVR factory for the first time. smile

A mate has been recently for the punk weekenders and has said it''s a bit grim these days.

Always have fond memories of coach trips for the lights as a kid and that fortnight. hehe

I made it back unscathed!

Have to say it is a very working class seaside resort. Everything is priced down to a budget, apart from things like the 'blown glass' ornaments that no doubt find their way onto Nan's mantelpiece each year. They were bits of overpriced tat.

The Pleasure Beach was excellent value for money, we had a great time. The staff were really friendly, nothing was too much trouble. But we were there on Monday and not a weekend. Perhaps it's different at weekends.

Things I noticed, there are no Mr Whippy ice creams available anywhere on the Prom. Halal Fish and Chips is a thing. The only decent pub (Wetherspoons) The Velvet Coaster, is rammed all the time with over an hour wait for food. There are no people there under clinically obese.

We didn't see any stag or hen trips, but it was a weekday.

I quite enjoyed it. If you go prepared for chav central, then you know you won't be disappointed.

My grandma and grandad lived in Bispham (North Blackpool) and I spent many a happy hour in my childhood wandering along the beach with the dog. They died in ’85, and I thought Blackpool itself was going downhill even then. I visited again, Christmas ’07, driving along the prom with my ex, and it was dire…. The thought of it being even worse than that, puts it on a whole new level.

I was told all the Blackpool money lives in Lytham St. Annes, which itself is nice, and the Lytham St. Annes money now lives about 10 miles north east of that.

Where I worked in ‘88/89 in Preston, a number of the guys lived in Blackpool itself. Their wives ran BnB places, and they only just made a profit in their work. Although one of the guy’s brothers owned a kebab shop in the town, close to the prom, and he made a small fortune at it.

I really don’t know what the town can do to turn itself around. Its needs monumental investment in indoor activities as the weather just isn’t that great. The biggest local employer is BAE Warton and job security there isn’t wonderful. Going north to Cleveleys and Fleetwood and I suppose onto Morecambe, the story doesn’t get much better.

My original stomping ground of Southport is going the same way. frown

Used to go as a kid in the early 80s and even then I struggled to see the appeal. We used to go and see the illuminations which, as Bill Bryson points out, are very impressive.... if you've never seen electricity in action before.

Avoid that entire area as much as possible. In fact I try to avoid all sea side British towns. They all have the same soul destroying vibe to them. It's a shame as many sea side towns are, underneath the neon and peeling paint, beautiful little towns (Blackpool not withstanding, thats a sthole through and through).

Did a stag do there about 15yrs ago. Quite honestly it was a great afternoon and evening. Yates pub had a DJ and was rammed like it was Saturday night, but it was 12pm! The local bar brochures recommended the best ones if you're on the pull and, for a stag/hen do it seemed spot on, helped no doubt by the sunshine. That said, we stayed in a shared room for about 10 of us. At £10 each I felt more than a little overcharged but given that we were only in the room for a short time it was ok. The northern women were quite something!

I remember the first time I went into the Flagship bar in the early afternoon and it was packed solid! The atmosphere was brilliant and the Tower Lounge was the same too.

I used to enjoying going to watch Joey Blower on a lunchtime as well on the Sunday. I loved going to Blackpool with the lads in the early to mid 2000's. The ladies(a term I use loosely) were very friendly! biggrin

Good times. smile

My dad was brought up in Blackpool, although he later lived in Poulton le Fylde which was the nicer bit.

His dad and stepmum remained there, and after she died a few years ago as we drove out of the crematorium his words were ‘well thank fk I won’t have to visit this sthole ever again’

Morecombe is like that. What's ,so depressing about it isn't just that it's run down, but how great it could potentially be with that amazing bay.

Morecambe is on the up. Following the opening of the Bay Gateway - a direct link to the M6 two years ago, there are plans for some serious investment in Morecambe.
A multi million pound investment in The Eden Centre North is one of the things currently in the pipeline.

I think Morecambe is OK, It's had millions spent on the frontage over the last five years, 20 years ago it was a real dump.

The huge second hand bookshop on the front is amazing...well worth a visit. The owner is a real character.

Stunning views over to the Lake District Fells.

Southport promenade has improved greatly in the last ten years too.

The trouble with Blackpool is it's full of idiots on stag and hen parties.

Thanks, I've just calculated that it's nearly 20 years since I've been to Morecambe.

I used to love Morecambe back in the day.
The fun house was superbly dangerous!
