Going to Cardiff with the wife and was wondering if anyone can recommend any nice bars or restaurants for the evening (nothing too loud as we would prefer to talk).

And also things to do during the day. Think maybe a day at the beach and a day in Cardiff.

Any help greatly appreciated.

If you want golden beaches then you'll have to go to the Gower, 50ish miles away. However, Nash Point is a nice bit of the coastline and the Plough and Harrow pub close by is very good.

Cardiff itself is quite small, Church Street, Mill Lane and Quay Street are the one to head to for bars and food. All within a few minutes walk of each other.

If you tell me what to like to drink and what sort of restaurant you're after i'll give you something more specific.

Probably cocktails to be hinest and for food she’s a vegetarian but doesn’t mind going to meat places as long as she has something to eat. Or Greek/Italian food.

Would prefer quieter places as we need to be able to talk to one another.

If you’d have said hoppy beers and burgers I’d have a dearth of recommendations !!! Can’t help with veggie food unfortunately. Rum and fizz, Bootlegger and The Alchemist (busy) are my only cocktail experiences, all good. There are a lot of small quirky ones about though, The Dead Canary being one. If you want a quiet night, stay away from Mill Lane !!

Errrrr. The beach at Barry is excellent. Obvs Barry Island is cack but the beachfront and beach is all good.

There are also stunning beaches at Southerndown and Rest Bay.

As far as the Diff goes can recommend Cosy Club for a long lazy meal/chill to have a good catch up. I tried Dirty Martini after the rugby on Saturday and that was actually pretty good considering how Cardiff can get on a match day.

Plenty of decent bars on Mill Lane from the top of Mary St towards the Hayes. If the weather is good they all have outdoor seating.

Brilliant thanks for that didn’t realise they had a cosy club. We liked the one in Liverpool.

If you go to Monk Nash and Nash Point, be very careful of the beach, you can get cut off and then you end up on the lifeboat reality show as they come out to rescue you. Check tide times. Both have car parks, Nash Point is pay at the hut (if the fella is not taking your loot as you arrive). Monk Nash is park in a field with an honesty box. Latter is a short walk to the beach but can be very slippery if wet, been there on a glorious day and it is dead, other days quite busy. Positively boggy in the winter. Monk Nash probably has the better option of a beach, that is sandy.

Really, if you go there watch for the cliffs. They are not safe.

Llantwit Major also has a beach of sorts (rocks count?) and a cafe.

All of those, really watch out for the cliffs, there are regular rock falls and people die.

Southerndown is a good beach as is the walk up through the old house gardens but private parking and now a fiver. The pay and display at the top comes under the vale of Glamorgan and is a rip off £6 for a decent time there. I have stopped going there now.

For cocktails, try Pennyroyal on High street, near the castle. They have some really interesting cocktails, a million miles from sex on the beach stuff. Quite expensive but well worth it.

I havnt been in for a long while, but the bar in the park plaza hotel on greyfriars road was always a nice place we used to start in, because you could speak easily- before things turned messy!!

Ogmore is a really nice beach, about 30-40 minutes from Cardiff. The museum at st fagans is free (except parking) and nice to walk around.

Bar 44 is a decent tapas place with a good drinks menu opposite the stadium. I often go there for work meals and drinks with clients.

Otherwise, stick to St Mary’s street, the top end closest to the castle. There’s a load of new cocktail bars around there now. Some are quirky little places with experimental offerings, whilst others are much bigger more mainstream affairs. All are chav-free, so places you can take your other half, unlike most of the bars down the other end of that street.
