Having always been one to do Christmas at home we are seriously thinking of disappearing for the fortnight to somewhere warm. Me, the wife and 12yo daughter.
Initial thought was Cape Verde, but for the money it seems feasible to go further.

Our options are therefore in no particular order:
1. All Inclusive to the Caribbean.
2. 2/3 nights Bangkok followed by ten nights Koh Samui or similar. Not AI but somewhere to go out evenings etc..... night markets, street food etc.
3. 2/3 nights Kuala Lumpur followed by ten nights Penang. Ditto for eating out!

I have done Thailand but Mrs and daughter have not (I did Bangkok and Phuket 25 years ago).

So ...... we are probably leaning to Far East.... chance to see some wildlife, relax, eat well. I guess I am looking for recommendations, experiences, watch out fors etc. For instance you tube seems to say Penang is quite misty.

Will be building it myself..... have had quotes for package deals but am shocked at the mark up. I will be having some luxury. Max budget 7-8k. Less would be nice.

TIA.

The Thais love celebrating Xmas. Any excuse for lights and a party. I'll keep an eye out for you on the KSR in Bangkok. Arrive boxing day :-)

Koh samui wouldn't be my choice mind you.

Bali's is lovely but for two weeks it's one hell of a schlepp.

Agreed - Ive been 5 times over the years. Stunning place and if you are worried about safety stay in Camps Bay or Victoria water front

Going to investigate Cape Town today but KL and Penang are favourites.
Any more thoughts on Bali? Borneo?

Work has chucked its stick in the spokes of this planning which means I am not looking later - Easter in fact which ties in with Mrs birthday - so same choices but happy to consider others.

Looking leaving 31 March to first couple days in April for two weeks.

Really need suggestions/recommendations if they differ form above due to the time of year change.

Wouldn't waste 2/3 days in BKK, dirty smelly place.

Some of it is, some of it is paradise. I wouldn’t bother going back, it’s not particularly remarkable as a package and it’s a pain in the arse to get to vs Caribbean etc

Edit to add as the OP asked: I’ve just come back from my third trip to Cape Town in two years. I spent Christmas there as a teenager once and it was bloody lovely. It also has the advantage of being insanely cheap thanks to the weak Rand. We ate in a few very nice restaurants there and the bill was always a pleasant surprise. Each day we had breakfast in a cafe and the bill rarely topped a tenner for the two of us. Add in the stunning countryside, lovely beaches, activities available, exceptional quality of the food and it’s pretty much perfect.

I’ve gone for SA myself, stacks up very nicely. 2 of us for a fortnight in late Jan. £1200 return direct on BA to Cape Town for both of us including a hire car.

AirBnB looks good value too, first 4 nights in nice apartment with pool on good area for £200.

Fingers crossed it lives up to expectations!

Thank you all for the suggestions.

My Mrs is not impressed by SA - i might work on her over the next few days - she thinks its dangerous etc from what she has read over the last 20 years!

However Costa Rica looks a good bet - any specific suggestions here?
