Agreed, not quite sure why the love for it. Apart from the sea lions, seemed to be chain stores and tat emporiums a-go-go. As mentioned, Golden Gate Park is lovely, as is Crissy Field too. Food wise, I loved Steak Bird Provisions SF.
Wasn't even that many sea lions there the last time I went. When we first went in 1998,the place was full of them. Only a couple there this summer. Perhaps it was the time of year?Fort Point is worth a visit - Right under the GG bridge.
If you're going over to Sausilito in a car carry on up and have a stroll in Muir Woods (probably too far to cycle, but maybe not, my memory of the distance is a bit hazy).
Take the ferry over to Larkspur and take a peek at the prisoners exercising in the San Quentin jailyard. There's a condo in Larkspur built in the quarry where the finale of Dirty Harry was filmed, but there's not much to see now.
Monterrey, as others have said, is a lovely place to visit, if you're looking to get out of the city - Probably nicer than going north, although you could try out some local wines if you do that (Maybe take in a race at Sonoma - Maybe a bit late in the year now, US racing seems to finish early).

The place seems designed with the sole purpose of extracting dollars from your wallet, went here once, got smashed!
