I have a cabin bag sized suitcase, a rucksack and a briefcase, but I'd really like a smart overnight shoulder bag type of thing that will hold a change of socks and underwear or two and a clean shirt and maybe a pair of jeans or trousers, wash kit and space for some papers and a notebook for work travel or a weekend in a city, any suggestions please? I don't need to carry a laptop maybe an ipad now and again.

My wife bought me a Tusting weekender bag a couple of years ago. Might be the kind of thing you are looking for?

I have the weekender from here (also purchased the backpack for a recent trip to the US). Great brand and quality products.

Timbuk2 bags are excellent. Originally made messenger bags for San Francisco market, grew and grew from there.

Very well made, good attention to detail on zips and fastenings. Also quite discrete and don't shout "steal me" like some brands.

I often travel like this and have found my Peak Design photography bag works really well.
https://www.peakdesign.com/collections/everyday-ba...

I can do a couple of days trip with one, albeit neat packing, and the pouch at the rear is good for my small work laptop, some papers and a notebook.

They are not cheap, but they're decent quality and look fairly smart.

I also have one of their 'Everyday Sling' 6L bags for longer trips hand luggage when I've checked a big bag.

The downside of PeakDesign is being web it's hard to get to see them in the flesh before buying. The only place I found, by utter coincidence, is a stall in a mall in KL (the Intermark) which has the Peak Design range on show (as well as lots of other random kickstarter stuff).

The large version of the Tusting bag mentioned further up is £865!!!
Nearly a grand for something to carry some underwear and a fresh shirt.

I can afford it, but I really wouldn’t. Each to their own, obviously...smile

I stay away 2 nights every week. I have one of these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/STILORD-Shoulder-Leather-...

It holds 2 shirts, pants, socks shaver, washbag, small brolly, 17 inch laptop, 10 inch tablet, various chargers and some paperwork.

Looks way better in the flesh than the pics, really soft leather, well made etc. I ordered about 10 different bags from amazon and sent the other 9 back as this was the best.

Exactly, I thought the Fossil bag was a bargain!

It's the top of what I'd pay, but I'm sure it'll last years.

Could you not shave the socks prior to travel, to save the weight of the shaver?

I have a Barbour overnight bag, good for a weekend away, durable etc
