Hi all,

I have been intrigued by the idea of a mk3 MR2 for the summer and I am even more intrigued by the idea of a TTE version which appears to have been a dealer optional accessory when new.

Bad news is I can't seem to find any for sale anywhere in europe.

Does anyone know how often these come up for sale if ever?

Thanks

Yikes!

Did no one bother with the kit when new then?

Do many modify later down the line?

I had one, one of the best cars I’ve ever had. Get yourself onto mr2roc.org, they do come up for sale once in a while. There was a guy based out of Rugby who ran Silverstone Performance. He used to bring in the kits and fit them. He also did a similar turbo kit called the SP turbo. So either a TTE or the more powerful SP kits would do you.

The TTE kit is like hens teeth also getting dated now, lots of people making own set ups tho. Also the 2zz from 1zz engine swap is very very common and apparently good.

Think YouTube has a video of two people comparing them. On a side note with its mere 140hp 1zz engine it’s alot of fun anyway, I have one.

They are really easy to work on, i have a thread on mine fixing the common smoking issue some place on mr2roc.com lol for project black.

2zz also looks like a great option though hard to come by. Sit back and wait I guess - shame i'm terribly impatient.

There's a few 2zz MR2s for sale at the moment for around £2000-£3000. That's pretty cheap and worth a buy considering the cost to get the conversion done is around £4000. They might need some TLC body wise but that's the same for most old jap cars.

SpyderLee did a video on YT about 1zz Turbo vs 2zz and the turbo is better but the reliability isn't as good. 2zz with a 1zz sump is pretty much solid.

I keep thinking to either get a Celica T Sport now and then buy a cheap MR2 later or just buy the MR2 now and do the swap later but obviously the price for parts would have gone up.

I'd suggest trying a cheap 1ZZ for now before you decide whether to have a turbo/2ZZ swap. You can pick up a pre facelift for peanuts that will work fine but not be a show pony. I can guarantee you'll have a blast.

I considered turbo, 2ZZ, 2ZZ with ITBs (as I have an Altezza with ITBs and love it) and K20, which are all tried and tested alternatives to the 1ZZ. I now plan on sticking with the 1ZZ for a while as it is the handling and feel in a lightweight chassis that gives me the kick instead of raw power.

I've seen a few V6s put in the chassis as well.

It will depend if you want a high revver or lower torque which is a personal preference despite what anyone says

I don't know if anyone is still looking but there's a low mileage one owner turbo on AT for £7K. Been up a while so demand can't be too strong.

Demand is still quite strong. It is just that it is not a good example - check the MOT history!
