Italian resorts forced to close I believe, at least for the moment.

Swiss tourism will announce guidelines I believe in mid November. The indication is that they'll try and do everything to keep a season going but will put in place restrictions to ensure safety on the slopes and the restaurants. The winter season is worth CHF 2bn to the Swiss economy.
At the moment for the lifts they fall under normal Swiss public transport regulations - i.e. masks will be obligatory. I hear that the big lifts - like the train and Signal lifts here in St. Moritz - may have an increased schedule to reduce queues and crowding. At the moment both wait about 10 minutes between runs.
There is a discussion about reduced quarantine times and testing here in Switzerland. However that doesn't really cover the key issue that if you fly back to the UK you'll then have to go into quarantine on return. I've spoken to friends who say that they're only coming if there is a lock-down in the UK when they'll move to spend more winter here.
I believe all the UK forces are not travelling for sports this winter. We have a UK inter-forces competition here and I'll miss the crowd it brings.
Speaking to friends who run or own hotels they report that overall bookings are down 60% though they're still fully booked in key weeks. Many are talking about staffing for a case where distancing etc is kept strict. This means that some of the smaller bars and even nightclubs might not open and other places and events will be smaller and 'resident only'. Some of the hotels had this policy during the summer.
The Polo and White Turf horse racing both have been cancelled. The women's ski racing has been expanded, though without organised viewing (the US events are off the circuit this year). The WEF at Davos has been cancelled in the winter and several visitors would fly into Samedan and then come here for the weekends before or after.

Has anyone ever tried Skiing in South America which would be Say a Jun to early September ski season.
Much higher resorts and I’d wager far fewer tourists
Chile, Valle Nevado. We went there about 16 years ago. It was great fun, but a little limited (at that time) in terms of runs and difficulty. I would go back again though. Think at that time they had X Games snowboarding comp. on and a number of Olympic ski teams were training there.Much higher resorts and I’d wager far fewer tourists
We were already in South America though - had a week in Brazil on the coast, followed by a week in Chile - but 'only' 3 or 4 days in ski resort.
Some runs were a bit too simple, some of the lift systems were a bit old and a couple of the runs were literally sheet ice. But I'm sure it's been expanded and updated since then. Watch out for the altitude - it can affect you.

If I was to travel a long way to go skiing/snowboarding I think I'd head to Japan.
Japan - over rated Bro....(TBH i prefer the off-piste open fields we get in Europe as tree skiing isnt really my thing. I know that Japan is a big place and could find what i like elsewhere but couldnt where i went. Glad i went but wouldnt rush back)

Nice to know the stereotypes extend to ski resort choiceTotally.
Wasn't jealous TBH. I loved Neustift and wouldn't swap it for any of the glam resorts, atleast not when race training.
Know a few guys that have married locals and live in the Stubai valley, very jealous indeed.
We'd drink pints and yagerbombs in The Dorf Pub. Went to Verbier to meet some mates and it was bottles of Vodka on the table, glad I wasn't paying, then I needed my pay packet to live.

Lufthansa have cancelled my direct flight to Munich on 26th November. They've replaced it with a stop in Frankfurt adding 4 hours to the outward leg. Oh well, at least it's not totally off for now.
Will this not impact you? “Please be advised that quarantine rules will change starting on 8th November. Anyone arriving on or after 8th November will have to quarantine for 10 days. Quarantine ends earlier if a test is taken no earlier than 5 days after arrival and the result is negative. Additional exemptions are possible depending on legislation that will be passed by the respective federal states.”

I'm told if your final destination is not Germany, ie you are simply travelling through to get to Austria the restrictions don't apply. I'll worry about it nearer the time though. Things are constantly changing.
I think you are right; you aren't leaving the airport via a transit lounge so you aren't entering the country at the first landing?Welshbeef said:
4 hour stop over in a departure lounge urgh.
If the airline moved the flight then the poster should complain and ask for a lounge pass. 4 hours isn't so bad in a nice lounge. By the time you have gone from the he plane to the lounge, and the time to connect it's more like three hours. Lunch, glass of wine and watch a film.

Sorry I missed the part you were connecting to a flight to Austria. I’m guessing I’ve also missed why you aren’t getting a direct flight to Austria? Surely quicker and more convenient?
Yes that would be easier, but there's no direct flights from Manchester to Salzburg this early in the season. We do a November trip every year so have looked at every option. Picking a nice car up at Munich airport and a 3 hour drive has always been the best bet. Obviously Covid is making things a bit different this year. My thinking was to get 2 weeks in early when the slopes are empty just in case everything gets shutdown again.

Could you terminate in Frankfurt and get a hire car? About a 5 hour drive so net/net probably the same journey time?shunt said:

Any reason why you cannot change the airport you leave UK from to gain a direct flight? Obviously Covid is making things a bit different this year. My thinking was to get 2 weeks in early when the slopes are empty just in case everything gets shutdown again.
