Do we think European summer holidays will be happening?

Specifically I’m thinking of Greek islands, when do we think flights to Greece and the islands will restart (if they’ve even stopped).

Anybody have any views?

No. Nor winter holidays.

I thought the same and assumed our August trip to Spain would be cancelled, but mentioned it on PH in another thread and others seemed to think summer holidays will be going on.

I just can’t believe Spain or France would want thousands of Brits who either have the virus or get it there and bed block ICU beds for locals visiting the country.

Yes. The economy of too many countries absolutely depends on it. I'd expect some restrictions to remain, but planes to sunny destinations will start flying again by July.

I know we are speculating as no one really knows, but I'd say it is probable summer holidays will recommence and almost certainly winter holidays.

Let's look at the facts; Austria is opening up its small shops from next week. They will be fully open at the end of the month. Events can restart there at the start of July. Germany is following a similar pattern but a few days behind. We can expect other countries in Europe to announce they are relaxing their lockdowns in the next few days.

We know there isn't going to be a vaccine available until next year at the earliest. However, there is a huge effort to find a therapeutic treatment - there is so much effort being made in this area it is hard to imagine we won't make progress on this in the next few months.

Then there is the financial impact of staying closed for two seasons. That has a direct health cost to it as well.

Finally, there is the testing regime - so far this is nowhere near where it needs to be be, but we can expect very big strides in the capacity to be tested once we get to the summer.

On the otherside of the coin, there is a risk we relax restrictions, don't make the progress on some of the items mentioned above, and then a second wave hits as we get later into this year.

However, on balance I think you are being a little too pessimistic. Whilst it looks bleak at the moment, things can very quickly change.

I presume travel insurance won’t cover us for CV if we go abroad. What happens if you end up in ICU for 2 weeks in Spain?

Or would we be covered?

We will need to wait and see on that. Everyone is going to be asking the same question so it will need to be answered properly, once we get over the lockdown.

I'm meant to be going to California for 3 weeks in August. I'm being optimistic that we can still go but not banking on it! Not sure where we stand on claiming on the insurance that far in advance.

I have the same problem. 2 weeks booked with the family in Disney in August. All we can do is plan for the worst and hope for the best.

The risk is areas open up too early, only to have hasty shutdowns again.

If you're looking for a relaxing, stress free time, how lucky do you feel? I'm not sure I'd want to be too far, and preferably with a surface travel option.

I can't see international travel happening this year, I'm not even sure we're going to Cornwall in August. frown

There will be plenty of people still who haven't had it, and while local travel and shops may be allowed I'd be amazed if countries will risk importing a fresh dose.

yes

My parents were planning on Canada next year, but are going to hold off booking for the time being, and will probably end up going in 2022 instead (all being well).

Me and the wife had a break in Scotland cancelled at the end of March. We've rescheduled it for next year, but only because it was a UK destination. If it had been overseas I'd have pushed for a refund, at the moment it's too uncertain.

Oh and I'd be avoiding places like large hotel complexes and cruise ships, where a super spreader could induce mayhem.

I imagine there will be a problem of quarantining for visitors to many countries if they get their outbreaks under control, which will exceed the length of holidays!

I have a family holiday to Italy for late July - Flights are paid for and I have until 6 weeks before to pay the balance of the accommodation. We need to renew passports too... not sure what I'm doing yet but there is no immediate rush!

The only thing that looks extremely likely is that cruise liners will be a highly unpopular form of travel in future.

This is my thought, I would imagine opening up borders will be the very last restriction to removed over a period of many months as the restrictions are being reduced.

Can you imagine the ststorm if it kicked off in Italy again because they'd let in a load of tourists.

I think Yes and No!

Look at Japan, they eased all restrictions, came out of lockdown with international flights and are now going back into it after another outbreak and I can see us doing something similar.

I would say that I agree that almost certainly if you book anything now then travel insurance won't cover it but section whatever it is for credit cards may do.

Personally I don’t see our halfarsed attempt at a lockdown being sufficient enough for other countries to want to allow Brits in any time soon.
