I’m guessing a thread about passport renewal is the wrong place. Do we think online is quicker than postal application then or is it much the same?
I figured that postal was as easy given that you need to send the old passport back anyway and having to get someone to authenticate his photo online was probably more hassle for them than popping round and spending five minutes filling in a form tbh.

Judging by this thread, it seems anyone's guess and doesn't seem to be a logic as processing seems to very from a few days to over a month.I figured that postal was as easy given that you need to send the old passport back anyway and having to get someone to authenticate his photo online was probably more hassle for them than popping round and spending five minutes filling in a form tbh.
I think you pay royal mail to "check" the application for a postal one and they provide a seal of approval. This might help speed it up.

Way easier to get the person to authenticate online rather than fussing about with printed photos etc.I figured that postal was as easy given that you need to send the old passport back anyway and having to get someone to authenticate his photo online was probably more hassle for them than popping round and spending five minutes filling in a form tbh.

Always? As far as I can remember. They do send it back, although not at the same time it would seem. I had the option to pay extra for it to be sent to me via 'secure' delivery for an extra £5!

Not limited to passports, I'd say online will always be quicker. The Mad Monk said:

No idea! I had a set of passport/ID sized prints taken v recently that I planned to use again for this.
Initially scanned it and uploaded, it got rejected due to not being a high enough quality (despite on the initial upload it being rated as fine...). I re-submitted this time just taking a phone pic of said photo and it was accepted immediately.

Are passport offices closed? Sending passport back seems a hassle, would rather go and queue up.
Unless you need to use your passport in the near future surely you can't beat the online system?Did mine today, ten minutes online and ten minutes to nip out to post the old one back to them.
That's got to be better than queuing in the regional passport office hasn't it?

What if it takes ages and I need my passport as ID for something? Or gets lost in the post.Did mine today, ten minutes online and ten minutes to nip out to post the old one back to them.

Online would be better if didn't have to send back?

Hyphen, currently due to the C-19 crisis the only option is to apply online, it is taking longer than normal. The Passport Office is encouraging applicants to use special (Signed for) delivery when posting your old passport back. If you don't post your old passport back, your application does not progress. Currently there is no fast-track service of any kind unless it is a family emergency or you are on government business. Online would be better if didn't have to send back?

Spoke to the Passport Office yesterday afternoon after the status has remained at 'send us your old passport' for a week after it was received by them (signed for by 'B Humble' ) . They advised it's taking up to two weeks for that stage to be completed and to phone again at the end of the week if the status hadn't updated. Agree on the point made above, you'd expect them to throw more bodies at it for the next month or so to avoid lots of pissed off Brits flooding their lines.

a question - do you have to send the old passport back at the point of application for the new one?
as stands mine is in date for a trip in August, but out of date for another trip September. so do I send it now and risk not getting either back for the August trip???
You need to send it in ASAP after your online application is submitted. Your application won't proceed until the old one has been received by them. as stands mine is in date for a trip in August, but out of date for another trip September. so do I send it now and risk not getting either back for the August trip???
I've been promised mine back in a 2-3 weeks but we'll see what happens (been fast tracked, so let's see how fast it really is!)
