As we can’t get abroad this year we’ve booked a few nights in Edinburgh at the Premier Inn near the Royal mile. Even if you book any premier inn right upto November it says the restaurant will be closed, are they just being overly cautious? surly they can’t keep them closed that long?

I’m hoping at least breakfast will be open when we go end of this month, kids love their breakfast and the main reason we use them. We have a car and want to see some of Scotland so we’ll just have to find places open, won’t be as easy as just walking in though.

I take it you are aware there is a global pandemic going on right now?

Thanks, that’s really helpful. You do realise that at some point they need to reopen?

I was only questioning that having all food and bars closed in all of their hotels until November seems a bit excessive for a large group like Premier Inn, considering a lot of other places will be open on Saturday.

I’d imagine that them staying shut is a safe bet so customers can choose wether they want to come anyway or not rather than say YES WE ARE OPENING THE DINING and you book 3 months in advance for your stay and then the restaurant is closed. Cue lots of kicking off etc

As far as I can see their restaurants are closed 'until further notice' so could re-open at any time.

This is hardly surprising and it’s one of the things that puts me off booking anything in the UK or anywhere else in the world with my original travel plans for this year now being in tatters. You simply don’t know what you’re going to get when you get there.

They don’t ‘have to open’ their restaurants at all. I’m sure a lot of businesses in this situation will wait and see what this weekend (and the coming couple of weeks) brings in terms of hospitality starting to open up in relation to R Numbers/second spikes/localised lockdowns etc etc etc. It’s possible that (for them), there’s no point in bringing all kitchen staff in to work and taking them off the furlough scheme only to reverse it 2 weeks later for what might be a tiny portion of their turnover/profit relative to selling rooms.

It baffles me that people still don’t understand that pretty much EVERYTHING is up in the air in terms of how things might progress back to normality and it’s not just a case of flicking a switch for some businesses/organisations. Many will be waiting for others to suck it & see (rightly or wrongly).

The doctors and covid researchers I talk to at the hospital are planning for an October/November second wave. I would be pretty anxious about booking anything until spring next year unfortunately. While I know these predictions may be off they have been correct in pretty much everything they have been saying since Jan/Feb.

We have a couple of weeks off in September (had to book well in advance doe to work restrictions) and would love to go away but I think its unrealistic, people may be able to get away in the summer but its still risky in terms of local lock downs or sudden changes in advice. If I was driving and staying at a second home or an area that I went to regularly enough to know some of the locals I would probably be happy to go but I would be avoiding our normal kind of adventure/beach holidays.

Get a Jetboil, some tins and packets of stuff, and do it all yourself. Bacon sandwiches always taste better outside anyway.
Far more of an adventure.

Don’t Premier Inn run a buffet style breakfast?
Can’t see them happening for a looooooooong time.

I was just going to say that. It looks like buffets will be the last kind of meal to come back. We’ve just had our AI holiday in Crete cancelled by Tui. It wasn’t until the end of August but they could see that the writing was on the wall for buffets so they had to call time on it.

Used to love AI but I actually went half board and even at that ended up eating out. I cannot wait to go self catering this year. Itll cost more since I constantly think I can eat a horse, and leave 3/4 of the horse ordered but cant wait. Ofcourse being in Scotland we still aren't allowed an air bridge. It has to be a different list from england. Pain in the back end. Cant be just all be the same ffs.

Thanks for the replies, some of the chain hotels Holiday Inn, Meccure etc are offering breakfast, they are normally buffet style, maybe they’ll do order only. Some Premier Inn when not busy you have to order the cooked meals. I hope the bars open, I’m sure we can sort food out in big city. If they don’t have a bar or food until November while others do, will have an big impact, I’d think they’ll review before then.

I wouldn't bet on any changes. If they don't do food then they may well not have the bar open either.

Many places are no longer doing buffet food (hardly surprisingly !).

No where’s doing buffet food because it’s not allowed at this time.

Relying on any aspect of outsourced catering or hospitality right now is unwise at best.
Seriously, plan to self-cater. If you end up not having to that’s better than going in the hope of chancing upon somewhere that meets your wants and then finding zero options.
