Providing there's no strict lockdown imposed in the next few days, I'm heading up to the Isle of Skye by way of Glasgow next week. Anyone got any tips for "must do/see/eat" type things up there at all?

Book everything in advance and I mean everything !!!, the island is chockablock and has been that way for years, its even worse this year with all the staycations. Pre-covid we carried out works at Talisker and my labour had to get accommodating almost 30mls away on the mainland.

The Bella Jane boat trip from Elgol was fantastic. Lots of dolphins and seals.

Great seafood in the Claymore restaurant

just done a tour of scotland including the isle of skye, in my vw campervan, portree, the capital is lovely, also went further north to uig via a lovely drive over the mountains with breathtaking scenery on the approach to uig, if you want to take that route, then then drive up to staffin and then take the 1st left after the general store shop/small fuel station, well worth the drive.

Avoid, . apart from the scenery it's dull, dank and dreich, everything is outrageously overpriced,
and the natives, even those in hospitality, are surly and cheerless.

You've been warned.

Cuillin Ridge traverse? smile

Three Chimneys at Colbost (although admittedly it's 20 years since we were there!)

Thanks, we're staying in Uig (providing Sturgeon doesn't lock the country down today) so looking forward to the drive. Hopefully a chance to get a few nice pics of the car against some great backdrops!

The three places that are must visits are as follows.

Neist point lighthouse. Tremendous views and if lucky you can see basking sharks and possibly killer whales close up.
Quirang to Old man of Storr. Incredible scenery and the landscape chosen by a multitude of advertisers and film makers.
Elgol The view of the Cuillins From here is simply breathtaking.

You might want to review today's announcement before you commit. Shame, because i think it's meant to be a reasonable weekend for weather.

Yep, we've now cancelled everything we had booked. That's the fourth time this year we've had a holiday booked and had to pull the plug. Gutted.

Shame! The scenery will still be there but I guess not being able to eat/drink out somewhat spoils a holiday.

I’m heading up on Saturday! Can’t wait. The Co-op is still open so I’ll just purchase my drinks there. No midges at this time of year either. smile

The Co-op at Broadford had Talisker on offer when we were there in August, as well as Skye brewery beer, which was very good.

I am sure hotels will be able to serve food past 6pm (not too sure about alcohol)

They can but we'd planned a few days of activities with meals around 7:30/8:00 then we could get back to the hotel for ~10pm.

The idea of heading straight back to the hotel as darkness falls, eating form the same menu repeatedly and being "trapped" there all night didn't appeal so we've booked some other stuff closer to home (which may still end up being canceled depending on any new restrictions!).

Definitely heading to Skye when things are more normal though.

I got back from a week in Skye today.

I stayed in a cottage and ate in everyday. It was amazing!

The weather wasn't exactly brilliant though, but it is Scotland in October. The autumn colours were coming out and it looked incredible.

My favourite moment was a Sligachan to Sgurr na Stri hike. ~26km, but fairly easy and probably one of the best (if not the best) view in the UK. I saw more deer and stags than people.

I got through a lot of fuel as the weather could be terrible in one part of the island, but ok in others, so I moved around a lot. I also had no set plans, so this was easy to do.

I stayed in the middle of the island in Moll (just north of Loch Ainort). As a location it's perfect as it's easy to get everywhere without very long drives.

It's very much an outdoors place though. You will get more out of it if you're up for hiking and dealing with poor weather. For the last week the weather was changeable and the amount of mud in some locations was wild. Be prepared/

On the alcohol front the answer even for room service with food was a definite no this week...
