Gregs, Blackwidow…what are the current smoke signals coming out of BC?
How fked are they looking?
BC gov/health estimating things returning to 'normal' sometime in September. Vaccination roll out has ramped up and covid cases are dropping at a good rate. However from a federal 'Canada' point of view, it's still mirky. No idea when travel will return to normal for tourists or opening up the US/Can border. etc. Not sure how Whistler is doing this summer, but mountain biking here in interior BC is ramping up. Sun Peaks sold out of its downhill MTB season passes in 30 minutes! Last winter for me personally was awesome, I skied over 60 days, but it does miss the non-local tourists for sure. Hopefully it all opens up to let you riff raff in.

Yeah not much noise from the Federal Govt on travel yet. Vaccination rates are significantly improved from a few months a go, and I think all the provinces have a reopening plan now. There remains widespread concern about variants, though.

Bit mad we are now almost in June and it could go either way.

Since I wrote my previous post there has been a recommendation for no quarantine requirements for vaccinated travelers. That they are even talking about it is a good sign.

Well chaps I’ve just taken a punt on the Fairmont end of Jan. I believe I have got a cracking deal on a Gold room reservation, with free cancellation upto end of Dec 2021.

I’m getting close to booking a diy family trip for february time, only sticking point is cancellation policy on the accommodation- it’s thru airbnb, but they say I can on cancel up to 48hrs after booking. If we’re not allowed to travel to france would we just need to claim off travel insurance???

I bought one. Just hope we can go there!
You're quite right about the costs though; I have 2 x 6 day trips booked, so anything else is FOC.

Don't even think about lending it to a mate for a week.
The lifties are on commission for each one they seize being used 'illegally' I think the reward used to be Eu50 per seizure.
And using your dad's, and trying to pass off as a Senior when you have a snowboard attached to you feet is not going to work........
....for long...

I bought one too - helped by an additional discount if you had a season pass for 20/21 (what a great investment that was...got all of 4 full days and 3x half-days out of it)

I’m hoping to do 3 weeks in the PDS at Xmas/new year, plus another 1-2 weeks through the rest of the season, so there should be room for it to pay for itself.

We're all booked for xmas 2021 in the Grand Masif. Its my daughters 18th when we're there so will be pretty special. I can't see them having too many silly restrictions left over by then at the current rate of vaccinations barring any new left-field CV19 super-variant. Our chalet is owned by a Brit who've been good so far and I'm sure we'd get a refund as we did this year in the worst case. We're driving so its only the hotel & Eurotunnel exposure (£300 for whole family).

Having dropped over a grand on kit in the sales this year despite not going, I have to be a glass overflowing optimist !

Has anyone been to Davos, Switzerland before? Worth the trip for a week?

Looks unlikely we'll be skiing this coming season - with kids in school, we cannot handle much disruption in travel plans, or quarantine, so caution is likely to win out.

Absolutely gutted.

As a tech developer, I keep thinking I'd like to do something with ski tech, or the business in general - having worked on health tracking devices, it feels like tech such as Carv is really only scratching the surface, and anything that helps people travel and get on the slopes would be great to work with.

Hopefully if this all dies down, we'll be in Obergurgl at the end of November, then once a month from then on. November is a DIY job, fly to Munich then drive, the others are booked through Crystal.

My son is at school in Davos but given we live in St. Moritz we rarely feel the need to do a lot of skiing there but have done on several occasions. We have friends in Klosters.

I find the town a bit soul-less as it's a long strip, mostly along one road through the valley. Unlike here or Zermatt everything seems a bit stretched out.

The skiing is excellent and certainly enough for a week. There are linked areas to Klosters and down the valley in the opposite direction. It's also got a very good cross-country skiing area and if you were thinking of trying that it would be one of the best places to do your first lessons. It's got one of Switzerland's biggest ice-hockey teams. It's one of the resorts where the young (and Olympic) winter sports athletes will be based.

From a cultural perspective it's much more 'domestic' in its guests than here, Zermatt etc. Davos is doable from Zurich so there are a lot of folks with weekend places there. Travel by train is excellent so getting there from Zurich airport should be easy.

If you fancy buying yourself a pair of custom-fitted boots it has one of the best places to do so. (https://www.heierling.ch/en/home)

So, you'll almost certainly enjoy it. Of course I'm biased and think you should go over one more valley and come to the Engadin instead!
