Anyone had the pleasure? Preferably flying into Manchester. I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best, as long I have some space to do a basic workout and maybe a supermarket delivery/deliveroo I think I will manage. Unfortunately all routes are red as is my current location. Deep joy!!

Manchester isn’t (or wasn’t) on the list of approved airports for arriving from red list countries.

Why not take a holiday somewhere where they don’t have a ‘red list’ (ideally a green list so you don’t need to quarantine) and then fly back to the U.K.? Could even work out cheaper and at least you have some freedom!

Thank you, I had incorrectly assumed all major UK airports would have that facility. Holiday is difficult to swing because of my current location, and the cost of flights to get anywhere. It’s a good shout though.

If you do get back you more or less have to stay in your room the entire time.

In theory you are allowed to exercise but according to the rules you have to ask permission and it's not guaranteed.

Sounds hideous.

Although I have heard that there is actually no legal authority for the security guards to prevent you from leaving............

My source in the police told me that if someone absconded to their home, the local force would have to escort them back to the hotel- their force told whoever, that they would not be doing that as it was a waste of space resources, especially since the “prisoner” could do the same again the next day!

Look into staying somewhere else. I did it recently and had 10 very pleasant days abroad for much less money than the hotel quarantine.

exactly this. Though I'm not in a red zone, I'm looking at stopping somewhere else first, currently looking at airbnb in iceland.

My dad did it at Heathrow when it first got introduced. It was ok, there was an exercise yard and the staff were mostly very nice and happy to be back at work. The food was mixed, mostly really good but often cold because of how long it took to arrive. Unlimited tea/coffee and soft drinks. He had a supermarket delivery with some snacks and beers and cracked on WFH. Could have been worse. Most of the people complaining seem to be doing so because the price is quite high.

The “mam and daughter in law” in the link posted above sound awful. I love the picture of “conditions” in a perfectly standard hotel room that they’ve left crap all over to make it look bad.

Non-story from ignorant smoggies. They even quote them as saying ""It is actually a beautiful hotel, it is just the way it is run."

This one is slap bang in the middle of busy Reading town centre, 30 miles from Heathrow. Where is the logic of that?
Now look whats happened.

Quite… tits or teeth do we reckon?
The pair, who flew to Istanbul recently where one had surgery, had to pay £1,220 each to stay in the hotel - a government requirement for all travellers returning from a red list country under coronavirus rules.

I suppose there are many hotels closer to Heathrow, but really it’s a ‘get on coach at arrivals, get off coach and walk across the pavement through the security fencing (not pictured)’. They do seem to have all of Berkshire’s Max and Paddys working there. Given what I saw earlier there are plenty of inmates ordering deliveroo.

All thoughts of avoiding this are out the window, as the country I am residing is now red.

Sounds like a deeply, deeply unpleasant experience but I will just have to get on with it!

Unless you travel to somewhere green first for a couple of weeks (or come in from an amber country)

Use the radisson blu at Heathrow if you can. My dad stayed there when he served his sentence upon return to the U.K, the food was good, a little cold sometimes but good. Said he had an amazing pie one evening. He was also complimentary of the staff.

The Twitter link above does sound dreadful. I can only assume that the hotels are being paid very low rates, and that the majority of the fee is funding security etc?!

Won’t do their Tripadvisor ratings any good though !

Depending on where you are in the world, come back through a green or amber country. You've lost the time anyway as you would have to stay in a hotel, so you might as well serve it in the freedom of a green, or at home from an amber. Although if coming through amber I think you'll have to serve 10 days there, then 10 days at home. Still much better than paying a fortune to stay in HMP hotel.

Yeah that idea has been floated today. Costs are covered, so its less of a money thing, more a make it as painless as possible. I have heard Scotland is nicer, so may arrive in UK there and do it.

Or just fly to a yellow/green and book a completely separate flight the next day, being realistic - how would they know....
