Who's going skiing and where? 23-24

Also going before Xmas just be very careful to avoid the Varsity Trip (the combined Oxford and Cambridge uni ski trip), unless you want to share the resort with 3,500 students.
This year it’s 2nd-10th December, I think in Val Thorens.
Fabulous fun if you’re a student, pretty holiday-ruining if you’re not.
Also 500 Sheffield Uni students, 17th-24th Dec in Val T. I suspect the cheap early season is rammed with students these days. This year it’s 2nd-10th December, I think in Val Thorens.

Would normally be Silver Star in BC for Xmas, but we had pretty much written it off down to the vaccine regs and our oldest child becoming 12 (not keen on being jabbed). However it seems that Canada may be lifting all COVID entry regs on 30th Sept, so maybe we have a chance - especially as Early Bird passes are available until mid October.
Then of course the pound decided to disappear into the toilet, making the already sparse flight options likely to be even more expensive by the time we are ready to buy.
Ho hum.
Yup, 1st Oct they are ending it. https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covidThen of course the pound decided to disappear into the toilet, making the already sparse flight options likely to be even more expensive by the time we are ready to buy.

Curious - Why Silver Star and not other resorts in the area?

In-laws have a house on the mountain. We have been going there since 2004 and have grown to love it. It’s a bit of a slog getting there from Scotland but we normally go for Xmas & New Year. Curious - Why Silver Star and not other resorts in the area?
It flies under the radar and is largely a local ski mountain, but it has a great variety of runs and is good for families. Quite special to have a ski run below the house and the top of a lift next to it.

That would explain I ski a couple of days a year at Silver Star (i get a few free passes) as I'm only a couple of hours away. what’s your thoughts on val cenis? we have the opportunity to go there with a big group of friends (lots of kids) and wondering what you think of the place?
wife and I have been to courchevel a few times, so for my daughters (3yrs old) first trip, we were thinking of going there. pro’s- we know the place, restaurants/ bars, lots of non skiing stuff to do. cons- expensive, especially taking a 3yr old that might hate skiing!
But the chance to go to val cenis is quite appealing- cheaper, lots of other kiddos/ families there with us…. but don’t know anyone who’s been. is there as much non skiing stuff to do?

Just looking now - thinking of a self-catering apartment in Morzine for mid-late March.
We know the area well but I have seen some reports that the resort closes down a bit after the French holidays in February - does anyone know if this is true? Also if anyone has any recommendations for reasonably priced but decent three-bed apartments (we're taking the 1yo and the 3yo plus the grandparents so we can escape a bit!) within walking distance of Pleny/Super Morzine then that would be great.
Can't wait - probably going to hire boards to save faff with the flights and transfers but going to be good!

Not in my experience, no. Sure, if it's an especially warm spring you might have to gondola down from the Morzine/Les Gets side or bus to/from Ardent/Prodains for the central PdS area but if it's a cooler spring everything should be open.We know the area well but I have seen some reports that the resort closes down a bit after the French holidays in February - does anyone know if this is true?

Sites like Vrbo are usually good hunting grounds.malks222 said:

It's a large ski area with a good range of well maintained runs, I have skied there in December, January and in the spring and always had good snow. When ever I have been there the vast majority of the skiers have been French, you won't see many brits. wife and I have been to courchevel a few times, so for my daughters (3yrs old) first trip, we were thinking of going there. pro’s- we know the place, restaurants/ bars, lots of non skiing stuff to do. cons- expensive, especially taking a 3yr old that might hate skiing!

They have invested in it quite a bit over the years I have been going, but getting between the main ski areas isn't as straight forward as it could be and some of the infrastructure is a bit behind the times. The skiing at the top of Termignon is excellent, but it's serviced with drag lifts.
I don't know what you had in mind for non-skiing stuff? They're not party villages but there some good bars and restaurants.
I have only ever stayed in Lanslebourg, Landlevillard is a bit more like a typical ski resort with purpose built hotels etc.

It definitely doesn't close down after the Feb half term! I go every year for Easter, along with thousands of other Brits. This year Morzine closed mid April, but there was skiing in Avoriaz until the end of April.

We've been very bad at visiting other hills. Done a few wineries though. Would love to go during the summer and I think both my wife and I could easily see ourselves spending a lot of our retirement in the area too. Any good Porsche Garages in the area?

I did think that it sounded very odd! Read it here: https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=35...Fingers crossed for some decent snow. I don't think we'll try to get our three-year-old skiing this year, she's very small and risk-averse so don't want to put here off! Might try a little slide though if she takes to the sledging...

Would be going with wife (reluctant skier) and 3yr old, so thinking- swimming pools, ice rink, bowling alley, mountain restaurants with a view….. that type of stuff, definitely no apres party going on this time! As I said, I know where i’m at with courchevel, been enough times now and think might be best to stick to what I know with the little kiddo in tow!

It's an excellent wine region for sure.
Not many Porker garages in the area unfortunately. Few specialist mechanic shops, but not much else, only Porsche in Kelowna and a few sports car sales places (August Kelowna to name one).

There is a leisure centre with a pool for sure, an ice rink, and mountain restaurants. Don't think there is a bowling alley. As I said, I know where i’m at with courchevel, been enough times now and think might be best to stick to what I know with the little kiddo in tow!
