Long haul plane food

Airline food is an international competition to produce the best microwave meal.
Certainly, pre-covid the meals on KLM, Air France, Lufthansa and Emirates in poverty class were perfectly edible.
I look forward to the meals because it breaks up the boredom of a long flight.
Then there's Austria Airlines. I can't remember the main course but the tiramisu and the coffee were great.
I did fly WestJet earlier. (Or WorstJet, another story!) and the food was terrible and the coffee was even worse. They serve McDonalds coffee FFS.

Austrian's tiramisu is probably the worst I've ever had, but it's still tiramisu. I ended up on a Saudia flight back from Jeddah a little while ago, same weekend as the F1 was there, which was something I never wanted to do because of their reputation. It was actually fine though, including the food.
20 years ago airline food was much worse, although you could fill up on peanuts. And at least it's not the mother in law's, even if it too comes out of a heated hostess trolley.

Is that still on the menu! I think I’ve had that 3 or 4 times since last September. To be fair it’s actually quite nice.Greendubber said:
I find BA premium economy food pretty good to be fair the times I've had it, definitely the best 'plane food' I've had.
That’s probably because it supposed to be a club meal, so if you are judging by economy standards it should be good.Petrus1983 said:
Yes - definitely still on the menu as this was last Monday. I have to say that it was lacking a few carrots - but seriously, I saw the economy offering and it far exceeded that - we’re not just talking about the crockery. It makes me sad - because I have to return in a few weeks in economy but it will be fine - serious question - is Gordon Rameys PlaneFood going again from t5?
Yes.GT03ROB said:
People taking their own food on board always reminds me of the movie Hannibal! But full English in T5 BA lounge is great.
One other point on this food thing…. If you order a special meal….you will count yourself out for an upgrade. Maybe not a big deal, but a consideration.
Ignore my ignorance - is Full English another company offering food you board with? Minus Chianti I’m guessing. One other point on this food thing…. If you order a special meal….you will count yourself out for an upgrade. Maybe not a big deal, but a consideration.

Ive never heard that before, but thinking about it the times I have been bumped to business or first has certainly always been when I have not put in a special request.Alorotom said:

Ive never heard that before, but thinking about it the times I have been bumped to business or first has certainly always been when I have not put in a special request. It makes sense - if you have a ‘changed’ economy meal they then won’t be able to serve it closer to the front- and you’re usually bumped as the flight is overbooked so will need all the dishes in economy. Btw - I’ve never been bumped in all my years of flying - and never request a different meal

My friend and I got bumped from Economy to Premium many years ago on our way to Vegas. Sadly leaving one friend back in Economy as he'd booked separately a bit later! Only time that's ever happened in all my years as well.

Other than via friends who work for BA, I've never got an upgrade, even when I haven't ordered a special meal. What am I doing wrong? One other point on this food thing…. If you order a special meal….you will count yourself out for an upgrade. Maybe not a big deal, but a consideration.

I’ve realised that it’s more of a thing of the past. Also my 12 transatlantics, 4 Euro flights and a return to the Far East each year is sweet FA compared to some other travellers/business accounts. Petrus1983 said:

Sorry about your father. The Executive Club rankings do start to make a real difference though - more so than just a free upgrade IMO. I’m silver - I get to pick which seat I’m in when I book, business class check in, have the lounge access including the lounges of the partner airlines, priority boarding (I don’t use it - why be on the plane longer than needed!). But the cumulative is quite a nice flying experience.

Yes, they do. I'm Silver, too, although I think that expires at the end of this year; I haven't been able to make enough flights to keep it up. Zumbruk said:

I’d consider it a bonus in life! Like you were - I don’t fly from choice but necessity. As soon as I lose silver I’ll either pay for a better cabin or a lounge pass. paulguitar said:
The last time I went in BA Premium Economy, the food was the same as ordinary economy, except we got proper silverware and a real glass. I think the better food must be a fairly recent development?
Same for me, in Dec last year - so not long ago. LHR to Maurtius. Food was abysmal in PEGassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
