I had a strenuous hike today with over 1100 metres of ascent but it was worth it for the wonderful views.

Any guesses of what the big mountain in the background is called?
Elbrus ?

Recommendation for waterproof ankle / mid height boots?

Don't really want 'high top' ones if can be avoided, but would like something to keep me properly dry....
from my experience makes no difference, gaiters are better, or get hiking boots with sock type inbits

I think it's Monviso, Cottian Alps ?

what you using it for, i prefer decathlon stuff myself
Mainly just for walks around Wales. I’m a complete beginner, but I would rather just buy one bag if possible.

I've got this, great for scrambling and mountain/hiking. feels like it isn't on my back.

10 year warranty, says women but it is for men, choose large.

I would get 40l one though as 30l is tight and can use as a wild camp carrier.

All decathlon mountain stuff is tested and designed in the alps.

Thank you. I’ll visit a Decathlon and try some out. 10 year warranty is very good.

Yeah that's the good thing.

My winter jacket, rucksack, trousers are all decathlon.

Rucksack only issues are small waist pockets and drink holders hard to get to. But half price of premium brands means spend more money. Gas canisters cheapest around as well.

First hike / snow shoe of the season yesterday, almost 10km with 800m of ascent over a total of 4 hours. Snow conditions were variable, some powder, some hard packed stuff which meant a combination of boots / shoes, although it did give me a chance to try out my new Saloman GTX winter boots, they performed flawlessly with good grip, warmth and waterproofing.

It was a tad chilly though, touching -18 at the peak!

Enjoy the pictures smile - Mythen Region, Switzerland.

Some simple ones this weekend to get back into it. Want to get my dog up as many Nuttalls in Wales as we can so bagged 3 we often miss. Y Gyrn and Corn Du by Pen Y Fan, did Pen Y Fan and looped back. Doing it from Storey Arms and detouring for Y Gyrn meant we hardly saw anyone and with still plenty of untouched snow about it was great. Pen Y Fan as usual was full of muggles in Converse wondering why they have no grip on the ice. Then on Sunday we did Fan Hir since every time I'd done the Llyn Y Fan loop we missed it for several reasons. Did it from the other side and the road had loads of cars parked up to do it. Fearing the worst when I saw several in almost normal clothes we pushed on. The bottom has always been boggy and now it's defrosting it's back. But once you get to the lake and do the climb it's all snow and ice which was stunning. Coming back down I tested some cheap spikes I'd bought and they actually work quite well. May get some boot gaiters as I know the next few will be more boggy stuff.

I'm back to my yearly attempt to find B2 boots that actually fit. It's a minor nightmare for anyone needing a wider toebox and narrow heel. I get such limited use from boots though as i'm in non-waterproof trail runners almost always but they have their uses for a couple of days a year. I was in my non-waterproof trail runners up around the peaks near Llyn y Fan Fawr over the weekend in the snow. I much prefer leaving the boots at home!

I've noticed a standard, 2e that seems to indicate wider fitting.

Sadly footwear fitting isn’t that simple.
My feet require a wide toe box and narrow heel. It’s extremely difficult to find trail runners let alone B2 boots. The only trail runners that work for me are certain Topo models and B2 boots I’ve not found an answer for yet.

Berhaus have a winter sale on. I picked up a £160 30L backpack for £80 last week (to replace my utterly worn out 2012 Berghaus pack). The 2024 version is much better and a real bargain.

Tempted by their 30L +5 backpack. Bag I use now is a good bag but is a camera bag (Lowepro) but it's about time I got something more for the job. Been hard to find a bag I like. I still want to carry a water bottle on the outside. I don't get on with the bladders.
