On the beer front (for those who remember I run a brewery here) we've launched a new beer for this season, a hoppy lager called Krush. Otherwise we're just plugging away, picked up a couple of new clients in Tignes and Val as well as in Meribel too.
Who's stocking your beers in Tignes this season - and bottle or draft?

Tignes will split by 'zone' - all on draft

Brevieres - Reservoir

Lavachet - Kodo, Brasero, Cantine (new owners so may change name/beers).

Lac - Moose, Terrachu, Tignes Cuisine (cans only), Embuscade

Val Claret - Grizzly and possibly a brand new bar opening there too.

Good morning from Bourg Saint Maurice.

Calm before the storm, today is going to be wild at altitude. We're on weather alerts for very high winds and lots of snow. The pisteurs are going to be busy in Tignes and Val Tho before opening on Saturday.

I might try get out for a little skin up in Les Arcs on Saturday.

I'll try keep people updated with news from this corner of the Alps throughout the season.
Is it still possible to ski down to BstM? Or has climate change put paid to that?

Remember doing it nearly 30 years ago when my brother and I had a pathological hatred of taking our skis off for lifts.

No affiliation except being a fan of their skis.

Black Crows Black Friday sale

Has some pretty decent offers. I've been looking for an insulated shell/resort jacket and was leaning to Helly Hansen Alpha LifaLoft which is really highly rated and reviewed. The Black Crows jacket is at 60% off RRP and less than half the best price that I could find for the Helly jacket so couldn't resist.

If you're after an all mountain charging ski the big pink one (Corvus) at less than £400 is a decent price. Team with some Salomon/Atomic Shifts and you have a really versatile package.

daughters ski lesson at hillend (edinburgh) cancelled this morning because of snow rofl

but it’s the first low level snow of the season in scotland, a bit carnage already. lots of snow on the bypass, easy enough to drive on if you are sensible, but someone already overshot the junction at the top of the hillend slip road, hit a van and straight over the top of the roundabout!

I learned to ski there…

starting in 1964 eek

That was before the chairlift went in, even before they had electric light; it was gas lamps in the evenings. Must have worked though as I’m still sliding down hills. Not been to Hillend for maybe 40 years now though. Maybe have to pop back and reacquaint myself to the joys of dendix.

In my student days we used to use the lifts at Hillend to get to the top and then cut down a field and then the golf course, I think we got most of the way to the Steading pub on occasion!

We went to Hillend pretty much every week as school kids (and at Uni). By secondary we thought we looked old enough, so after the session when the teachers had left we used to go to the Steading and attempt to buy beer. It was my first successful purchase (aged 15 maybe?) and I’d seen the Guinness adverts and assumed it would taste like some coca-cola-like nectar. I was unpleasantly surprised yuck. Never really been a Guinness drinker from that day forth…but next trip got a lager and never looked back beer. So Hillend was instrumental in getting me in to skiing and beer. And by association, girls…met my wife at a Uni ski club dance; I was one of the cool dudes in the ski team, thin, fit and with hair. How things have changed frown

Yeah people still ski down, I think many moons ago there was an official piste. Now it's a bit of a mix of the old pistes and then through fields. I've done it twice. Usually once a season we get enough snow to do it, especially if you're on your rock skis.

So, first snow update of the year!

Parked in Les Arcs 2000 and skinned up to the top of trans arc to see the new lift. Rumours are it won't be ready until new year due to safety checks etc.

Thankfully the piste bashers had pisted most of the way up and then someone before me had put in a good skin track. Genuinely got about 10 powder turns on the way down too! Looks like it's gonna warm up a touch tomorrow then the models for next week are all over the place. One more big dump without wind and all resorts will be good. The last storm had a lot of wind lots of snow movement.

Skis on!

Pistes looking good

New transarc

Pow turns!

Nice!
So the old TransArc has been fully removed then.
We are out for March: hopefully running by then: we will have easy access to that and Charmettoger biggrin

With the start of the new season, can't wait to get back to the alps. I'm taking my two boys to do their BASI level 1 in Saas Fee in mid Dec. Should be good fun. They persuaded me to do it too, even though I have no intention of ever working as an instructor. I've arranged with a French ski school owner I know for them to do their 35 hours shadowing over Easter. Hopefully by mid April they should have their level 1 and I can look at getting them ready for level 2.

Should still be in Benji's, but Pascal is a tricky person to keep happy!

Back to Andorra for half term. Just me and the boy, Mrs and daughter have decided it's not for them, which is a shame.

Hiring a car isn't worth it for two people and I always get a speeding ticket despite being the slowest on the road!! And Bus booked from Barcelona.

Oliver wants to board this time, he's had a full day lesson at the snowdome, hopefully it's enough!

Andbus are great. As long as you book it, they will take you very close to your accommodation anywhere in the country. They are also really flexible, so if you are delayed, or arrive early for some reason, they will get you on another bus if they have space - just call them, they speak English.

Heading back to Club Med Peisey Vallandry for a week over New Years, we were there in April and the set up is great for young families so we decided to do it again even tho the cost is a little eye watering at yr end! Can’t do Easter next yr so this was the only time that worked , gonna road trip it again so hopefully conditions for the drive will be ok.

Treated myself to full new gear for this year, board, bindings, boots, jacket, pants and body armour

Old gear bought back in 2009, taken a huge amountbof abuse, we'll over due being replaced

Old board was a Ride Antic, love it, I'm one with it, never ever even need to think when riding

Bought my new stuff in Tokyo over a couple of visits, much cheaper than the UK, great choice, very knowledgeable sales assistant's with no pressure to buy, very enjoyable shopping experience

New board is a Salomon Super 8 Pro, I'm mid-50's, started boarding in the mid 90's. Too old to shred on a pipe or park jumps so the new board is directional, stiffer with more float, chosen specifically for fast on piste carving and off piste deep powder

Plan to acclimatise and dial myself in with my new set up over early New Year with a few days in Slovenia Italy and Austria

Before taking on Ja Pow late Feb, with a couple of resort weekends on the main island

Including a long weekend in Hokkaido tasting the finest back country powder in the world with a snow kat tour
