St Paul de Vence ?
Crossed paths with Roger Moore there many years ago - I was wandering into town to get breakfast past the boules pitches, a dapper old gent and his lady were wandering out. I said "Bonjour", only to hear his inimical accent repeat it back to me. Suddenly realised who it was, stopped dead and did a double take at his now receding back.

Stone is very grey. Are we looking at Brittany again?

I’m thinking Nantes or Quimper.

Quimper seems to have more potential, but it’s guesswork now as I haven’t been there for 30 years.

I don't recall Quimper and Nantes looking very similar (and they are massively different in size) but I think you're right on Quimper. My guess of Concarneau was based on a holiday a few years, we also visiting Quimper and now you mention it that looks familar.

The joy of cultural and historical locations of France against their actual and current official (Department) location. This wouln't be the first time that regions in France have confused the thread.

To be fair many people in Nantes feel Breton. It's also easier to describe where Nantes is when speaking to people from other countries, I even do it for simplicity.

It's ironic that the Duke of Brittany's castle isn't in Brittany any longer... There is some debate about Nantes returning to that Region one day. But then again Rennes would lose their status in the process, quite complicated and surprisingly traumatic for a lot of people there.

O/T, but what status would Rennes loose?
