A clue

The sea in the picture is the Coral Sea.

The island is unusual as its one of the few rocky Islands in the Coral Sea

Did Captain Cook land there (and give the locals syphilis)?

He did land there, he used the high peak on the Island to identify a route out through the barrier reef which he had been trapped behind.

I can't comment on STD's as the locals didn't divulge that information.

Ok, after reading Cook's Wiki page I know where it is, but I think that is cheating so i'll not say.

If we get no more guesses by 5pm, you may as well say.

Useless info. I took the photo at about 7am on christmas day. You have to go up early as its a tough climb and it gets hot. captain Cook did the climb twice in one day I believe.

The small island is called Prince Charles Island because he stayed on the larger island so they named the small one after him - odd logic

The island is also well known for a type of reptile and blue marlin game fishing.

Can't give any more clues without naming the place!

The Kingsferry bridge has a span that can be raised. This was allegedly put there for shipping, but I can confirm it was really put there to allow the locals to be contained should the need arise! wink

There is also a rumour that League of Gentlemen was inspired by a holiday in Sheerness.

Built some houses in Marlow years ago - you could see the bridge from them.
Was that on the old Wethered's brewery site off Pound Lane?
