I didn't know where to find the grammar police, but need them to tell me if the phrase below is correct.

If it was so, you should have made it a poll with a simple "Yes" or "No" structure.

I'd have written 'If it were so', but I don't know why?

He/she's noticed that "brake" is always correct on PH (I'm feeling quite generous today).
