Working with the Welsh?

South of the M4 we're mostly a friendly bunch, who are quite happy to take this piss out of ourselves. If you want to experience some real Welsh culture, have a drive up to a lovely part of the world called, the Gurnos Estate, located in the old mining town of Merthyr Tydfil.
What's wrong with it?MR Kirbyz said:
Newport, oh dear oh dear
What ever you do do not go on a night out in the town. I'm 19 so have an excuse but over the age of 25 say you will absolutely hate it.
P.S, I agree with the above. I am 18 and I hate 'town'. If you fancy a night out, go to Cardiff or Chepstow. However, if you prefer pubs to clubs (like me) head to smaller places like Caerleon. What ever you do do not go on a night out in the town. Most people adjust to most strong accents extremely quickly - you'll just need to listen extra carefully for a week or two. Don't whine about not being able to understand - just apologise and ask for them to repeat what they said. Never pretend you've understood if you haven't, that's a one-way ticket to Deep st.
Thanks chaps, good to know they can take a laugh.
Im sure i can get used to there language.
Im also getting quite excited, Its the same pay, but get to save £150 a month in fuel. And save almost 2 hours a day in commuting.
P.s is newport really that bad? Only been there the once for interview, and the area seemed OK.

I've been here 10 years and its fine. The bad rep comes mainly from the nightlife in the centre, so stay clear (I never go there at night) and you'll avoid any bad experiences. As with everywhere, there's good and bad areas and Newport is definitely no more 'rough' than Cardiff. As others have said, it's not very 'Welshy' and it's only the Valleys that would make you feel alienated...
The main positive for me is the cost of housing is much cheaper than Cardiff and it's only 30mins to Bristol (I have friends there). Plus the Brecon Beacons aren't too far away! But the traffic can be a bh, especially J24-J27 of the M4 and all the roads around Tredegar Park (J28)...
Even though I'm happy enough here, I'm not sure if I want to raise my newborn in Newport as there's a small % who are pond life scum and I'd prefer if he doesn't grow up around them! But I'm in two minds as some friends have only praise for their kids experiences in Newport's schools etc...
