anyway, only idiots spend more than about 40 quid on wellies
I'm not an idiot, and I have a pair of Le Chameau Chasseurs which were more than that - best boots I've had (and I've had a few).

If you are standing in cow st all day, get some Puroforts or something though - my last pair of Aigles rotted away after I'd worn them in the yard a bit.

For riding, mountain horse.
confused

Do you mean "Mounting horses" or is there a special type of horse for mountains, like those goats with one side of their legs shorter than the other so they can stand on hills?

Haha. I think by "goat" you mean Haggis:

Anyway, "Mountain Horse" are an apparel company.
They make footwear for humans who like riding horses. http://www.mountainhorse.co.uk/index.php?p=product...

It seems everyone here hates Hunter wellies and yet they remain the best sellng wellies that exist!
I never thought I would see welly snobbery but if it exists, you'll find it on PH!

I started off with a set of hunters (still have them). It's why I'm advocating Aigles.

It's not snobbery, it's a product review.

I spend at least 4 hours a day in wellies, and 14 or so a day in winter, so they are very important, and you can really screw your back/hips/knees up if you don't get a decent pair. spend anytime in cold mud or standing on concrete and you will soon wish you had bought wellies that work.

Hunters are great for the high street and walking the dog, but for any real countryside stuff you need something a bit more... well less crap.

nothing says 'oik' more than a shiny Barbour and spotless hunters either hehe

Reading this thread, I have to the conclusion that I am really bloody lucky. I appear to have the only two good pairs of Hunter wellies ever made. What are the odds!?

Hunters were really good until they closed the UK factory, moved production to China and went for the fashion market.

Our village is very near Watership Down, so we get quite a few walkers coming in at weekends. You can pretty much guarantee that as they step out of their spotless Range Rover, the whole family will be decked out in Hunters. They then proceed to get lost round the footpaths.

FFS, last year, I saw a girl walking through Covent Garden wearing a pair of Hunters (and other attire) on a sunny day. FFS

I don't dislike Hunters per-se. In fact, the good ones are still very good (although, the common ones are cold, fall apart and are crap for walking and standing around in). I just dislke what Hunters represent.

Hoggs are pretty good. Just buy any old thing and run it over a few times! hehe

Must say I have never had a warmer jacket or more durable than a waxed one. (although mine is unpleasant to everyone but me now!)

Back to wellies, socks are the most important things, I buy thick hiking or JCB work socks, £10 a go, but they save your feet, so pay for themselves. No fun walking on bruised or blistered feet.

Late to the party here, but the best and most comfy wellies are the half-neoprene Muck Boot Derwent boots:

http://www.fruugo.co.uk/muck-boot-derwent-neoprene...

As a gardener, who would spend 7 hours a day in wellies during the winter, my mum went through many pairs of wellies and tried them all - cheap, posh, plain rubber, quilt lined, and neoprene. She swears by the above Muck Boots and says not only are they infinitely more comfy than traditinoal wellies, but also much much warmer. Obviously they arent totally waterproof for wading in 2ft of water, but then they are meant for everyday wear in filthy conditions rather than the odd brief puddle-wading session
