Cut him some slack, stop being a control freak. I was best man for my brother last Friday, I wrote my speech the day before the wedding... and I wrote his half an hour before he delivered it. I'm not even joking. The moral of the tale is, two weeks is plenty, let him do it himself.

I'm no control freak. Freak maybe, control is not a word I'm familiar with.

I know that he thinks his only daughters wedding is terribly important, he will write his speach I just wanted to give him some ideas to be getting on with.

He wrote a speach for our wedding 20 years ago and lost it; I will never forget that look of total terror.

I'm sure, given the importance of the event, which you've acknowledged his acknowledgment of, he'll write a speech to be proud of.

A couple of weeks ago I went to a lovely wedding and the father of the bride did a lovely speech, and then when it ended he and his son got out their guitars and sang a Paul Simon song along the lines of " No father could love a daughter as much as I".

It brought the house down ,standing ovation etc and much tears and emotion.

Faced with that performance no one could compare, although the groom and best man did a sterling effort.

I bet the old man laughed himself to sleep that night.

Trouble is that the Mrs looked at me and said, " how about doing something like that when ours gets married".

Somehow I don't think challenging the groom and best man to a yard of ale competition will have the same emotive effect on the assembled guests.

Cheers,

Tony
