I don't see why people have such a downer on high street for day to day office wear. I've had some Clarks Brogues for about 4 years and with a bit of care they look like new with hardly any wear on the soles or anywhere else. Paid £70 at the time. OK they're not got the Goodyear welt but from what I read it's a bad idea to wear the leather soles in the rain anyway, so not always practical. I also have some Ikons which were a little more (11 years ago) but have lasted similarly well, could do with a re-sole.

Stay away from clothing shops that also do shoes, awful quality.
I don’t have a downer on them but many people thinking high street for shoes think clothes shops and as you say they are generally awful.

It is not bad to wear welted shoes in the rain. The issue is when they are new that they need to be worn in dry conditions to “condition” the sole before you do wear them in the wet.

Nonsense. This is PH and everybody knows that leather soles are treacherous in damp conditions and will result in you contracting trench foot.

The only sensible option is to wear rubber, as the actress said to the cordwainer.

Indeed, I have had trench foot fifteen times and I’m on my third set of feet and second set of legs like triggers broom. Anyone that still has their original feet and walks this earth in welted shoes should hold their head up high.... in a rainstorm hehe

Not been on this thread in a while. Had a bit of a downer on these overpriced shoes as had a pair which didn't fit right well.

Despite trying a few specialists, I didn't really get much enthusiasm for proper shoes. Just a case of fetch your size and that is it.
The best service and advice was probably from The Whitby Cobbler. Lots of good advice but It is only a small shop and unfortunately he had to keep nipping off to another floor to do keys every time another customer came in.

I still haven't found a seller that actually measures your feet properly or indeed measures them at all. Shame really, at this price point I would have thought sellers would be keen to make sure everything is right. I'll maybe try going to an official outlet in future and see if that differs at all.

Anyway, went window shopping and ended up getting a fantastic deal on these. Hopefully they'll be comfortable enough to wear as a 'daily'.

i used to wear army surplus ste that cost about a fiver. These all look like those.
In the school pound (lost property) I used to pick up army boots for 1/- a pair. Great for the bike with their metal quarters on the rear. Showers of sparks at night. On the other hand, I wore these Barkers last weekend to a baptism. Bought 30 years ago and still perfect.

I'm presuming CC = ChemicalChaos - a fellow PH'er known for his Brokeback Mountain style choices.

The ones I bought are a short Chelsea boot with leather and elasticated sides, but the company make boots for many Rock N Roll bands and pop stars.
While we were checking out the boots another couple came into the carpark in a 458. smile

I do have 3 pairs of cowboy boots that I usually wear when on the motorbike smile Hence the name Fatboy wink

It has been a while then hasn't it, if you thought for one minute you'd get away without someone commenting on that shaggy floor covering (rug?) in your shoes photo! hehe

Getting the right width as well as length is a critical beginning to finding a comfortable fit in off the shelf shoes.
I also find that it varies from make to maker as well.
I'm a 9.5 - 10 by most makers, but an 8.5 in Barkers.

When trying shoes in a shop, don't forget that the ones on display have often been tried on by many people before you, and probably aren't a fair reflection of a fresh out of the box pair.
I've also found that there can be slight variances between two pairs of the same model/size that can make all the difference.
More than once I've taken my 'pair' of shoes from two separate boxes (and yes, for the smarty pants amongst you, that would still be one left shoe and one right shoe).

Majorca seems to be a bit of a hot bed for Iberian shoemaking, Carmina and Meermin being there I believe. Do the Spanish have a history of wearing cowboy boots?

They look very 'utilitarian'. Probably great for (eventual?) dog walking though.

As an aside, today is the first time I've worn the Jeffrey West shoes to work, complete with the red laces. Gone down very well. Rest of the outfit was quite conservative to balance.

Good man you have taken the main step

Now you need to get yourself down to Gresham Blake for some outfits to match

Just checked out their website. Quite an eclectic mix of items, most too 'fun' for me.

This I actually quite like (quilted insert apart):
