My colleague's pair of shoes was in tatters so I offered to do it up for him. It was quite in a state when he brought it over. It should be in the bin really.
Before
A bit of clean up with renovateur and conditioning
After
Some cream polish to minimise the scuffings and wax polish to bring out the shine. Decided to do a light mirror shine on the toe cap but didn't want to over egg it. Wasn't quite sure if he want it that shiny and I didnt want to spend too much time on it.

that is an awesome transformation. I have thrown away (well, ebayed) shoes in that sort of condition before. I have got some of the shoecare gear but not sure i know enough about it to really do a proper job. Never got close to mirror shine for a start! Was it you that wrote the leather shoecare guide?

Haha thanks. You mean the detailed and lengthy shoes polish process? That would be me 😂 I have to say he was pretty pleased when he got it back.
Sad to say and I concur with your observations, there're quite a lot of tatty shoes I see on a daily basis. A little bit of conditioning and cream polish does wonders.

The reality is, that the majority of men's shoes, don't look much better than where you started from there.
I see some truly shocking sights on train and tube journeys.
Very nice result.
Amazes me how many guys are wearing £40 Burtons and Next specials I see some truly shocking sights on train and tube journeys.
Very nice result.

I suspect though that most people don't care about their shoes or how clean they are. I always have mine clean and polished, (depending on the type I'm wearing). I even clean the rubber parts on trainers or more casual shoes.
When I'm in the states I buy loads of these magic erasers
As they're great for cleaning rubber on these or anything similar with vulcanised rubber like converse or vans.
Grabbed a pair of Charles Tyrwhitt leather chelsea boots from their clearance section for £99, seems they have been replaced by a slightly different style

Bit of a bargain at £99, leather is not as soft as the calf leather on my barker boots but they did retail at 3 times the price

I don't know if there's a qualitative difference or only branding, but I've seen more than my fair share of Reddit comments giving this money-saving tip that I think it's worth sharing.
As far as trainers go, I'm not the most obsessive about cleaning them, but if I wore more formal shoes on a day-to-day basis I might consider establishing a cleaning regimen. It does make me wonder how the leather on a pair of Adidas trainers might respond to the same attention as Kelv_W displays...
OK so I've bought some of that Saphir Medaille D'Or Mirror Gloss (neutral) for a pair of brown shoes. It wasn't cheap so I'm hoping it's good stuff. Question is how do you apply this?
I'm familiar with 'bulling' shoes using wax polish to get a mirror shine so is the Saphir used the same way or is it applied, brushed off and cloth polished? If the former I'm not sure the advantage it giives over using the bulling method with wax polish?

Brilliant. Thanks for that, they're not expensive but they wear away quickly and don't last long. You can save a fortune by buying them as 'melamine foam'. Use the same bulling method for the mirror gloss. It just gives it the extra shine with slightly less effort. However it is suggested that you do your usual wax/cream polish first as the mirror wax has no nutrients. I find I get a slightly sharper shine with the mirror gloss.I'm familiar with 'bulling' shoes using wax polish to get a mirror shine so is the Saphir used the same way or is it applied, brushed off and cloth polished? So did I do the polishing for free? Hmmm... could be anybody's guess haha..
