Have we had a thread about her yet?

Self-made presenter doing '10 Reasons Why' You Tube clips which are very good, AND turned down Russel Brand.

I think I am in lust.

Sadly passed away yesterday in an accident whilst riding her electric scooter. Seemingly also the first death involving a scooter, which did surprise me.

I did on occasion watch some of her videos, raised a few smiles along the way.

RIP Emily

When I first read it I thought must have been an electric moped but apparently an actual electric scooter which is nuts to take on such a busy roundabout.

The scooter was given to her by her boyfriend:

I watched her channel occasionally, I can't believe the news.

She was a tortured soul, RIP.

Ive not been round that roundabout for a few years. Never thought it was that dangerous before, but having seen a video of the "improvements" and learnt that hers is not the first major accident there it just needs to go back to the old way.

He must feel terrible now. Even though it's not his fault in any way!

I tend to agree. I didn't know her in any way more than her content but she came across as fun. I used to watch the "10 Reasons" for a while. Used to enjoy them. I know the area she used to live in quite well, recognised the roads. I even saw her, and one of her sisters on a Dating app a while ago as well (Yes, I swiped Right on both! biggrin )

But then the constant VLogs of her going on holiday with her sisters started to get boring. Her family own the Hartridge Brewery Company, so she could afford to play at being a TV star. When it was clear that she didn't have the talent to make it. She also let her anxiety become her "thing" which defined her, and rather than seeking professional help it always seemed to me that she wanted to dance around the edges of it. Then she decided that she would become a fitness nerd. It all just felt a bit inauthentic.

The last few posts I saw of her before unfollowing her were on her freezing her eggs in the hope of one day having children. And how supportive her (younger, and a bit wet) BF was about the whole thing. I could understand if there was a pressing medical reason for it. But it just seemed a bit off to me. She started to come across as a bit too narcissistic. Whether that was her body clock kicking in, or that she was changing as a person who knows. But it seemed it was her way, or the highway. As she said in the video above, having a younger BF means you can tell them what to do. Hence I stopped following her output.

Thoughts are with her friends and family at this tragic time of course.

Riding these scooters on the road is illegal. The same on the pavement. What am I missing here?

I see more and more of these people zooming around on the roads/pavements. Uninsured, no tax, no MOT, rarely with a crash helmet...this tragic event might kickstart a response!

Oh her, thats a shame. Those things are the future of urban travel, IMO, quick and powerful enough to use, small enough to stow in the office under your desk.

but perhaps the infrastructure is not ready?

Maybe in a car less environment with perfect roads and dedicated lanes but the design of having these travel at 15/20Mph where the CoG is basically above the usually small front wheel is terrible for safety - I can see a lot of devistign cranial/facial injuries happening from just small hole in the road. The small sit on scooters are safer from that point of view, having a lower and rearwards CoG.

They are great fun thou.

A tragedy and needless death but I wish certain users of our roads stop going around with an air of invincibility.
As pointed out above these things are illegal in this country. Yes they are the future but as we know road legislation in this country is woefully slow. Therefore given all these things if you choose to use these devices then extreme vigilance, care and patience is the name of the game.

The police don’t seem to care. There are loads on the roads in London and the police seem to take no notice; I saw one pass a police car (with no action taken) only this morning!

I was in Stockholm a couple weeks back and these electric scooters were available to hire all over the place. They were dumped everywhere and people bombing about with no helmets and not much idea either.. My local colleagues informed me that a few people had already died recently on them...

just found a link below....

Not directly, but he bought something for her which he would (or should) have known is illegal to use on the road, presumably knowing she'd use it on the road. It's possible the characteristics of it contributed to the accident (regardless of which person was directly at fault), although obviously the inquest will shed some light on what happened.

Shouldn't all road users should be treated the same? We do tend towards might is right, when I guess in an ideal world, we should look out for the more vulnerable first.

I digress

It could be just my perception. But it's these new "toys" that sit high up in my awareness of being badly controlled. (E-Scooters, e-skateboards,hoverboards before them etc) Certainly worse per number than other 2 wheel machinery. I wonder it that's because people who buy these things don't tend to have cycled a lot or even ridden motorbikes. So simply don't have the experience at reading the road, where to position yourself to aid being seen or even be able to "best guess" what other road users are up.

It is a very unfortunate and sad accident but these scooters are illegal and so riding one in London is especially stupid and her boyfriend will regret buying it.

Their design is inadequate as a 'motorised road vehicle'; the wheels and tyres are far too small for the cracks, ruts and potholes that exist on today's streets. They lack proper suspension and brakes so are totally unsuitable in normal traffic and dangerous to pedestrians and anyone else.

It is stupid to use, or potentially permit their use when anyone contemplating riding a moped must demonstrate road traffic knowledge etc pay tax and be insured.

I'd also suggest the electric bikes should also be controlled as mopeds as most can exceed the 15mph limit by the flick of a switch!!.

This is incorrect.

The vast majority of e bikes are factory limited to 25 km/h and require some pretty serious modding to get round the assistance cut-out limit.

Nope. Many have an 'off-road' setting.
