If you have access to a John Lewis it's probably a good place to start, lots of concessions all under one roof, has excellent online shopping as well.

Massimo Dutti well worth a browse.

Don't expect to get everything in one go and don't expect to get it all from one place, you may only pick up one item, but you really need to think about your lifestyle, where you go and what you do.

Invest in a pair of well made shoes.

Good call on Massimo Dutti, good for a relatively affordable Italian style. Do they have stores outside London?

Can you seriously not think of an occasion where a decent suit might be needed?
I only wear a suit for the very occasional funeral or wedding, and in both instances I see no need to spend a load of a top level suit. If I'm going to wear it once every two or three years, it'll be a price that reflects that.

Same parent company as Zara.

All the more reason for having one very good suit, I would say.

I wear a suit 2 or 3 times a week. TU from sainsburys does the job as clearly it's a steup up from my George at Asda Jeans.

I wear suits a lot, so it is relevant to me

Charles tyrwitt casuals or Tm lewin?
Don't do this! I get all my work shirts from these two but ordered some casual stuff nd the cut really was disgusting.
Could you have bought a slim fit by accident. I ordered one but sent it back as it didn't feel right. Normal cut/shape is fine.
No I think maybe I have. I'm average height and weight/build and this shirt was cut like a square, baggy on all sides even though I ordered same size as usual.

Fat face is your friend.
Really, middle aged surfer? Do you recommend he goes and buyers the complete works of Jamie 'git face' Oliver, a VW camper and holidays in Cornwall?

The OP is no longer a teenager and is asking about looking smarter.

The jeans are actually not bad in fat face, hard wearing, decent cut, and they aren't all "distressed" to look 10 years old from new.

Got a couple of sweaters/jumpers from there too, avoid the "worn" looking stuff.

Jaeger is worth a look and they always have a sale on, Charles tyrwhitt for smart and casual shirts. Supplement with the odd shirt or jacket or coat from one of the big department stores and you're sorted.

You're joking surely?

They are terrible IMO.
Agreed. Awful.
They're like the bd love child of an Alfie Moon and a Harry Hill.

Diesel for me. Great fit, great quality, and (often, with the higher end stuff) no stupid huge/bright logos. I'm approaching 30 and I buy a lot of Diesel stuff, mixed with the odd bit from Zara.

I should add that these are for going out in and are a mild form of peacocking.

Which you know you're doing right when other guys who can't pull the outfit off don't like it.... but girls do.

I don't know about 'peacocking', but you'd certainly look like a massive cock in one of those.

Look more like the short of choice of that Dr Christian chap to me and as such is as likely to attract certain blokes than women.
They also have a certain whiff of wker about them.

The boring answer is probably where you buy from & how much you pay is generally irrelevant but work out what suits you and stick to that. Sort of classic but not dull usually works - trying too hard to be old/young/look at me is a usually a fail unless you're a male model, especially wealthy or just don't give a fk.
Can't go wrong with stuff that fits properly either.

Nobody has mentioned M&S.
It's the perfect shopping experience for feeling middle aged.

I'm the OP's age (give or take a couple of months) and Mrs Pints seems desperate to get me to look and dress younger. This has included shopping trips to Bench and TKMaxx. Not sure what to make of it but since she's in her 20s, I've not been arguing. I have to assume the womenfolk know better.

My problem is that at 40, I still dress like this 80% of the time:

And the other 20% of the time, I'm in bed wearing my Winnie the Pooh jimjams:

biggrin

I feel very self-conscious when I have to dress in a suit and tie.
