Tried it first with Tesco a few years ago. The problem was that they obviously have a motivation to give the rubbish/short dated stuff to the online customers leaving the good stuff on display in the store. As such we stopped.
A year or so ago we tried Ocado. As they don't have real stores there is no such incentive to them so you get stuff with good length dates on them and the quality is good. Their website and iphone/ipad apps are great too and make the shopping really easy.
I don't think this is a problem any more? Or maybe it's just my local store. Anything with a short shelf-life is pointed out to me by the driver and I can always not accept it. Their pickers are also good - you can add notes on the shop so for example when I bought some bibs, I asked for 'boy' colours so I didn't end up with a load of pink stuff.

Ocasionally I get substitutions. 99% of the time I'm happy with them (and they are price matched). I actually found that Ocado were worse for offering dodgy substitutions. One of the big benefits of Ocado was the 1 hour timed slots, but my local Tesco store now offers this too for no extra charge.

We tried it once or twice. It was the alternatives they kept providing that annoyed us. It's like they really couldn't be bothered to check the whole aisle for what we'd actually ordered so just grabbed something which resembled it, sometimes getting it entirely wrong.
Bread was almost expired.

Not for us, or certainly not the Tesco version.
Its all automated so its impossible to pick the incorrect product unless the chosen item is out of stock and then, if you've chosen to receive 'subs', they will pick an alternative product which is usually of better quality.

Substitutes are very subjective because my opinion on an alternative line might not be the customers but they have the option to reject this at the doorstep.

In my experience online shopping for your food is much better than a store as the availability is always much better plus if you cant have a certain line you'll never lose out because, invariably, the line you have subbed will be a more expensive line.

OH tried this with Tesco's once.

They unfortunately had cocked up the address on her record, so instead of High Street xxxx, they had High Street Bawtry, about 8 miles away. They discovered this at 9:30PM and the guy to be fair said he would continue but we could wait.

Because of the distance, the order had gone out to the wrong store. But they put it on a van specially and delivered it the next morning, with a box of chocs to apologise.

Unfortunately they missed a bag, and had to come back again later.

Not tried it since.

I dont understand that, all routes are preplanned and programmed into satnav before the driver sets off and unless the street/house has recently been built then they shouldnt have an issue.

Use it every week.

Shopping gets added during the week depending on what we need, then we choose a time slot that fits us and click deliver. So much easier than dragging both of us to the shop to go through all the hassle that it brings.

No stigma, I think you're mad to choose to go and do it yourself when you have the service available.

Having a browse on the Asda site and it's painfully slow when actually trying to select products.
I seem to remember we tried on-line shopping and on of the various supermarkets one was great at delivering all the meat with use by dates of the next day, or stuff that was damn close to being off, basically the stuff no person shopping for themselves would have picked up.

The other issue is you can end up lazy and repeatedly ordering the same staple items, leading to dull meals, it's also hard to spot any really good deals that you may have chosen, say a new breakfast cereal that's on offer or similar.

Used it with Asda a couple of times now.

No complaints really, fresh stuff that's been picked has reasonable use by dates and the website must have just been slow that day I originally had a look.

Used the Tesco delivery service for a good few years now.

I never let them have the opportunity to substitute, and this saves a lot of grief.

Book ahead and delivery will only be about £3.50 which is a bargain I think.

I also used to spend ten minute grabbing voucher codes - could pretty much guarantee at least a fover if not more off - but Tesco seem to have got wise to that and most codes I try dont work anymore, which is a shame.

I once wasn't paying attention and ended up with 4 kilos of apples (instead of 4 apples), 2 kilos of onions (instead of 2 onions) and 2 x family sized desserts (instead of two individual sized portions)hehe
The nice man from Ocado used to carry my groceries up two flights of stairs to my student kitchen.
