The official winter 2013/2014 snow thread

I find myself spending a lot of time on that wind map still and just saw something that (to me) looks really odd - the low pressure over Iceland seems to have two 'centres' adjacent to one another. Normal?

Nearly an inch of rain so far today. It isn't cold but it never really got light, its pretty miserable once you chuck the wind in too.

The lack of cold here appears to be making Puggit a little premenstrual!
I'd take a tornado over snow any day of the week:http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=convecti...
I'm in the Alps currently, the forecast for Xmas Eve overnight/Xmas Day is over a metre of snow AT RESORT LEVEL. That's massive - but IMO if that arrives, with the very hard-packed state of the pistes at present, it'll take them a day or two to make the pistes safe and I doubt there will be many, if any, lifts open.
The pisteurs are saying that the off-piste avalanche risk will be higher than its been for over 20 years, because the base is so thin and nothing will bond. Sadly that all points to festive fatalities, because some will ALWAYS ignore the warnings.

The Monday/Tuesday storm continues to look menacing - it has the portential to challenge for the lowest ever recorded pressure in the UK. I suspect there will be many without the capacity to cook their Xmas dinners....
Looks bad all over the UK?How is the area near The Wash going to fare? Looks like east coast will be lightest winds from the map above, but still windy.

Not a problem... I'll be doing the turkey in the BBQ again Puggit said:
You lot really are a bunch of jessies , a worrying storm consists of minus 30c temps , a couple of feet of snow combined with winds gusting at 80kph all while carrying on with life as normal. Jesus christ you need to MTFU , you don't know what a real winter is LOL .

In Canada that might be the case, but we don't get extreme weather like that. Our country can barely prepare for an inch of snow without falling on its arse.Jesus christ you need to MTFU , you don't know what a real winter is LOL .

The latest presentation release for the MAJOR STORM due to hit on the 23rd December. This only includes the main risk areas for the Monday risk, and excludes 24th December risk further North. This will be released Sunday. The damaging wind swathe is well covered, with most prolonged damaging gusts expected across the South Coast of England into Hampshire, Sussex and Kent. The South West although experiencing damaging wind gusts will likely see the most severe wind gusts easing off slightly. The concern is that the South East corner and South Coast will maintain the stormy threat the longest, well into the evening and overnight. Gusts are approximate at the moment, and may vary slightly. Those residing in Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Bristol Area, South Wales, Somerset, Hampshire, South Berkshire, Sussex, Essex and Kent should be especially alert to the threat of extremely stormy conditions, with the most prolonged threat further to the South East corner.
Fair do's DMN, deleted my snidey post which didn't really add to our meteorological discussion.
Yesterday was strange for us in west Wales, bouts of heavy rain and very breezy, then things suddenly got much windier, rain went sideways, sudden very bright bluey-white flash which knocked power out for 3-4 seconds then a couple of seconds later a single rumble of thunder. More wind and sideways rain, -5 mins later things had calmed down again but the kids' trampoline which is a heavy thing, was on its side.
Never known such a bright flash from a lightning strike which was evidently a mile to mile-and-a-half away.
Other local areas lost power for longer too. Proper little Atlantic squall.
Straight line winds no doubt but I noticed a flock of birds get sucked into a brief vortex-like mess, -wonder if there were a few little 'gustnados' about.
