Conspiracy Theories for Cynics
Discussion
Well, when it comes down to it, who are "truthers" hurting anyway? Slightly offensive to the families of the loved ones who perished in the atrocities committed by the mentalists? Perhaps. but the families are likely never going to bother reading about any of this waffle in any case.
I hope you lot don't go truly mental though. I agree with a previous poster that it's a toxic subject to wrap yourself up in on a regular basis.
can't help wonder if X-Files is partly to blame. :P

I really dont think it is disrespectful to the families of the survivors . Quite a few of them are also 'Truthers'.
Its not like we are holocaust deniers or something, that would be offensive!
I think the only people we are hurting is ourselves, everyone else either ignores us or has a
whale of a time being offensive to us.
Well, not everyone. Some people are capable of reasonable discussion even if they think we must be crazy.
I for one am not trying to convert anyone. Someone earlier mentioned it was similar to religous beliefs and i think there is probably something in that. you dont need concrete evidence to have a gut feeling about something.

I read the full thread a couple of days ago when it was bumped. I was toying with a troll 9/11 truth thread just for kicks. seems to be the same posters involved from the depths of NP&E
Out of interest, how do think a troll 9/11 thread would be any different to any other 9/11 thread? As you say, you would get exactly the same people saying exactly the same stuff!

It is true that some of the ‘truthers’ are some of the most eccentric posters on such as the Donald Trump thread. (although I think most have been banned from the Trump thread for breakdowns and unacceptable behaviour). I find that quite fascinating actually, from a phycological standpoint.Hitler lived a long and happy life after WW2 in Argentina

... You cant really blame people for being curious sometimes although i accept that that curiousity can sometimes be completely misguided.
Conspiracy theories are not genuine curiosity, they are not genuine scepticism. In general they elevate a distrust of the establishment, arguably well founded, well beyond what is reasonable into the absurd.Conspiracy theories themselves are never subject to any real scepticism by their advocates.

No, no it's not. That could have been the Mafia, political opponents or whoever. Criminals don't like to get caught, quite frankly and cover their tracks.
But we're in another Universe that is a very crazy place now. Remember the activist/comedian Mark Thomas? He almost disappeared as he was taken for a ride by ex-MI5 David Shayler. Shayler was first to say that missile cloaked in holograms brought down the towers, he ended up wandering about in women's clothes. Mental person - BUT, some unstable people are still hooked on the cloaked missile theory.
What about the woman who survived the tube bombings? When the conspiracy nuts started doubting her story she even attended their meetings to get the story straight! What happened? They said she was a plant, making it up, couldn't have happned the way she said! https://www.reddit.com/r/serialpodcast/comments/2t...
Both these stories are in the 'Psocopath Test' by Jon Ronson, well, well worth a read!!
Some interesting stuff out there, but it takes you right down the rabbit hole - proper Alice in Wonderland stuff that WILL drive you crazy.
Read it, enjoy it, but don't let it take over. It's a new religion, with new gods, and new devils and it'll rot you from the inside out.

As far as all these other conspiracies go (moon landings and stuff) I have never invested any time in them but 9/11 caught me at just the right (or wrong) time and I dived in .
As I have said before i wish I hadn't
A mate of mine who I have a lot of respect for was really into it and warned me that madness lies that way and I should have listened but I got sucked in.
That said I am not doing a U turn, as silly as it sounds to 'non truthers' I believe what I believe. Maybe that will change one day!
Cheers

Don't post idiotic crap and I'll engage with you differently.
I gave you a chance to either post some credible evidence or climb down as gracefully as you wanted, but you posted drivel.

This perfectly encapsulates why nobody takes the 'question the truth' lot seriously. Their arguments sound like a GCSE English essay, with about as much conviction.I just don't understand how any can have such strong feelings and opinions, yet have such little will/nous to back them up with anything other than waffle.

Apologies for not having a photographic memory of what i was reading 16 yrs ago. ( i do actually have a fking awful memory) i also dont fancy putting myself through months of arguments with frothing internet strangers telling me to prove everything. Its a fking conspiracy THEORY. What is so hard to grasp about the word THEORY? There is no proof or it wouldnt be a fking THEORY. I just don't understand how any can have such strong feelings and opinions, yet have such little will/nous to back them up with anything other than waffle.

At one point, gravity was a theory as was the Round Earth
Its a hell of a lot easier to just say "two jets crashed into two towers and they collapsed and so did some other buildings, and anyone who questions how or why a guy in a cave on the other side of the world achieved it all must be a moron.
The world would obviously be a much better place if we all agreed on everything and nobody questioned anything or told lies or twisted the truth. discussions would be a bit dull though. We would all be the same religion, support the same football team and we wouldnt need politcal parties. Hold on..
By the way, i didnt even get a GCSE in english ( i failed my O level ) so thanks for the compliment
