I was working for British Leyland at the time and remember the call coming through from the hospital asking us if we new how to get a Mercedes engine out of a Princess.

Was I the only person working on the day of her funeral? The streets were deserted - very spooky boxedin.
Private hire cabbie in your MK1 Cavalier I presume?
Perhaps he was, but he wasn't the only one working on that day.
I was still driving a black cab in London then, and I only worked a 3 day week at that time, three 13 or 14 hour days normally.
Usually it was either Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
I remember that the funeral was on a Saturday, so I definitely worked that day.
Can't remember if it was a slow day or not, but it wouldn't have made much difference overall.
I worked to a daily target of £XXX, I would stay out until I hit that daily target, even if it had meant doing 15 or 16 hours to get it on that Saturday.
Those were the days indeed, four days per week reading good books, pulling up a few weeds and vacuuming the house to keep her indoors happy, and sipping good wine.

Years ago, my neighbour drove a black cab and that was exactly what he used to do. This was in the 70s and IIRC he worked until he made £100 and would then go home.

she was used by the monarchy to produce heirs, she was a virgin and charles never loved her imho.
At the time leading up to Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981 I was dating a haematologist who worked at Hammersmith hospital.
I have absolutely no idea of the veracity of what she told me, and in all honesty it sounds like an invention of an overactive mind, but she said that her department had to analyse Diana's blood, presumably to rule out any possibility of birth defects in offspring that may result from the union of herself and Charles.
She also said that she'd been told that at the same time, it was established whether or not that Diana's hymen was intact.
At the time, I believed it, although I couldn't give a toss one way or the other, still don't, but in 2017 it sounds like the worst Hollywood script imaginable.

Way off topic here, but I've heard this before about cab drivers and just why?

If it's a busy day and he's earning £25 an hour then he does 4 hours. If it's quiet and he's getting £8 an hour he does 12 1/2 hours.

Why not do 8 hours on the £25 an hour days then go home after an hour on the days he's only getting £8 an hour?

I remember the days following her death but was not really sure what to make of it - just felt really sorry for the kids. The media was hyped up from the word go and it got strange very quickly especially as right up to her death they had been hounding her.

Had one of those experiences that afterwards you think was a dream.

1990, doing A Levels and I went for interview at UCH. Had some time to kill before getting a late coach back, so wandering through West London I found myself at the Jaguar showroom where they had an XJ220 concept car. Now I can't remember exactly where this was and just seemed to stumble on it. I was kind of lost looking at this car, sensed someone a few feet from me, glanced up and unmistakably it was Princess Diana. Sort of nodded my recognition and got the hell out of there.

I looked a right state then, spotty sixth-form tt wearing a dodgy student overcoat. What was she doing approaching random people - OK - maybe she was trying to help what she thought was a homeless guy but come on.

OK Cool Story Bro and all that but wandering abot, no sign of any protection officers etc. Worrying.
