Random thought for the day and might well have been covered previously.
Why is Sat Nav traditionally in landscape format? I'd have thought portrait would be better since we are mainly more concerned with seeing as far in front as possible and not the church a mile to the left.
Depends how all the icons around it are displayed. Most sat nav units are landscape but anyone who uses their phone seems to just have it in portrait mode. I have a proper sat nav (and currently no car) so I haven't used any phone based system, do they give you the option of both? Why is Sat Nav traditionally in landscape format? As these are normally stuck in the screen, they are less in the way if they are landscape (a Tomtom in portrait mode in the middle of the screen would be quite distracting I think)
In my car (with no in-built sat nav) I use Waze on my phone in portrait mode (in a holder on the vents):
which is much more useable than in landscape:
Watching the waffle on the beeb this morning about the threat to Liverpool losing its UNESCO World Heritage status, which is probably worth a thread all its own, one of these sort of questions arose.
Obviously there were shots of the waterfront and prominent were the 3 ladies, The Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Authority building. So in this connection, why is The Royal Liver Building, pronounced Laiver or Layevah (phonetics not my strong point) and not as in the city name Liverpool.
If there's an obvious explanation, don't get aerated , just ccalmm down!

Thanks but an observation. I'm not particularly disposed towards posters who come back with that sort of answer, as it smacks of smart arse. However when the answer let me Google it for you is followed, without the benefit of it being made into a hyperlink for ease of use, to find that it doesn't produce an otherwise easily found definitive answer, but produces a series of links with banter using inappropriate language, and various answers which amount to not much more than nobody really knows then it loses its effect. Couple that with one of the links seeming to be very easy to lead to a very nsfw website then it makes me even less well disposed towards the poster, to the extent that in this case consider yourself filed in the idiots to be ignored folder. HTH. You didn't btw.Couldn't have put it better...
Back to the point, I'm from Liverpool and while not totally clued up on it, the name is derived from a 'Liver' bird, prounounced 'Lyver' which has something to do with Liverpool's past (I should know but don't...). There's two stone models of them ontop of one of the Liver buildings, one looking inland and one looking out, something to do with supposedly looking after the city. The name comes from them but I've always wondered why Liverpool isn't pronounced Lyverpool......

They pronounce lots of things funny there. For example, 'look' is pronounced 'locghshch' and 'Liverpudlian' is pronounced 'outraged innocence whilst almost certainly guilty. Of something.'Back to the point, I'm from Liverpool and while not totally clued up on it, the name is derived from a 'Liver' bird, prounounced 'Lyver' which has something to do with Liverpool's past (I should know but don't...). Sincere apologies, I didn't actually look at the links it generated. Certainly didn't intend to lead anyone towards NSFW.I am from Liverpool too. This question seems to appear on all sorts of forums on an (ir)regular basis and the answer as far as I can ascertain is "nobody knows". But there are lots of theories about why.

Should've probably worded that a little better, I meant famous. I knew of the majority of that list, Mabbutt mainly but no others.
The most high profile there I know is Nacho.
Come off it, what about 5 times Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave. The most high profile there I know is Nacho.
Interestingly most of the ones on that list are type 1. Not surprising really.

This is a genuine question, not a piss take. Can anyone identify the currency for me. My daughter has just found the same article in an antique shop, and this is the only link I can find with a price shown.
YenEdit: I know the symbol for Yen is ¥, just as the symbol for Pounds is £.
This is the equivalent of writing the word 'Pounds'.
17980¥ is about £123.
