How keen do you have to be ( or how st is your home life ) - it's 10C, pissing down, blowing a gale, and this guy was getting his rods out to go fishing off the beach...

I couldn't knock him for it, my home life is pretty good - but you'll find me out in all weathers tearing about the place on my Mountain Bike, came off once and nearly bleed to death, I was "never going to ride again" for about 30 mins, my 'recovery phase' started before I even got to surgery and I was back on my bike as soon as I could, the weather was nice enough that time it was easter, but the pain brought more than a few tears to my eyes.

Never underestimate the stupidity of a man with a hobby!

I can't see him. frown Were you a bit too slow and he'd been blown away or washed away by a huge wave before you could take a pic of him? frown

His arm is just behind that yellow sign, the diagonal pole is the fishing rod, I think

Trying to catch a duck.

I often see the hardcore anglers on the canal side in chilly, windy weather and wonder why, if it's such good fun. do they look so fekin cold and miserable. Doris must give em some right grief at home.

Very many years ago I was on a bus going from Tobermory towards Iona. The vehicle was barely narrower than the lanes, but this didn't stop the driver giving us a wonderful commentary on aspects of life on Mull, and pointing out red deer on hillsides that were barely visible to the naked eye. At one point we came upon a group of cyclists and they had to squeeze into a field entrance to get out of the way. Our driver eased past them, gave them a little wave of thanks, and then turned to say to us:

"Och, they say they do it for the pleasure, but I've ne'er seen one smiling yet."

Apologies if this has been asked before. How come a car radio, especially in newer cars, takes so long to come on? My newish bedside radio comes on pretty much as soon as I press the button, but the radios in the new Subaru Outbacks at work take up to 10 seconds after the engine has started. Seems and eternity if you have been listening to something on acc, then have to start the car. Maybe I should have posted in First World Problems...

A History teacher said pretty much the same thing to us in 1981 (class of 14yr olds), we all thought he was nuts. Whether he read the same articles I don't know.

If the UK banned servers/any linking of computers to a network overnight, what would be the effect on our energy consumption?

(Assuming the power plants didn't just shut down!)

Why do some animals (cats &dogs) eyes reflect light and others (humans, birds etc) don't?

A lot less than the cost of lost business and staff costs for people to administer starting and stopping all the server infrastructure

Because they have a layer at the back of the rods and cones (Tapetum lucidum) that reflects light back, thus giving the receptors another "go" at capturing light. Enables animals to see better in low light conditions.

What causes all the red eye in my photographs then?

My (and probably your) driving licence includes the first five characters of my surname. What if you don't have a five character surname..?
