For those who have bought Nixie tube stuff, in my inane YouTube wanderings, I came across this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxL4ElboiuA

I'm a complete technophobe. Cannot even handle a simple BT wireless modem thingy.
So bought a gaming pc, with much encouragement from my better half (the Sims) and son (Fortnite, porn, fk knows).
It's all arrived. I'm now doing the biggest electronics project in, well, ever.
Wish me luck.
As long as someone with a pc head has given your computer components a once over, you'll see building a pc is really surprisingly easy. I used to do it for fun, and build pcs for free for people. Lego for adults. So bought a gaming pc, with much encouragement from my better half (the Sims) and son (Fortnite, porn, fk knows).

I've wanted a 3d printer for ages, what did you go for? Single or dual extruder? (and what temp/materials?)

I went for an Ender 3 Pro. Single filament, pretty cheap at £250 including a fair amount of 'day 1 upgrades', and able to print most filaments (abs benefits from an enclosure).
Finished the build last night. Switched on, only to show all the symptoms of a defective main board. Emailed CS, who were great, and wanted a pic so they could make sure they were sending the right bits.
Got aforementioned better half to switch it on for photos, only for it to fire up perfectly as though nothing was wrong...

I appreciate that this is the Friv thread, so my question is obviously superfluous, but what do people actually 3d print at home? Why do I need one in my life?
Exactly what I thought... Then I started browsing Thingiverse... Essentially, I'll print loads of stuff for the kid's Warhammer hobbies (terrain, models, etc.). That'll pay for itself on it's own.
There's loads of little things we can make for gifts (lithopanes are pretty bloody cool!).
We're doing lots to our new house, and there's tonnes out there to prototype, or create fixings/brackets/etc.
There's even loads to help with my nascent woodworking hobby - jigs, clamps, etc. Mostly for a single use, but a lot quicker/cheaper/better than ones I'd make myself in wood.
Also, can encourage my boy's start in coding - can use arduino or Raspberry Pi to control and do some cool things with it.

All I can make out is a roll of barbed wire!
It's kind of sideways. The video is better to be fair, hopefully this link works:https://scontent.flhr3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.24130...
The barbed wire is pond weed. This is a huge, natural pond so no filter in there etc so it is cloudier than a filtered pond would be.

To recreate the plastic grommet that fits on the end of a vauxhall vivaro gear linkage. Unsurprisingly Vauxhall don't sell the grommet on its own, so the complete linkage mechanism is £231 plus vat to you sir.

How do you make things?
Are there presets online somewhere?
Pretty much - thingiverse has an enormous library of free to use designs. Download, then convert using slicing software (Cura, free also) into 'gcode' that's configured for your printer (there's a range of settings, but so far fairly easy to figure out). Save to micro SD card. Are there presets online somewhere?
Put card in printer, load the file, print.
That boat took about 35 minutes. I've also printed some upgrades for the printer itself tonight - it's just printing a cover for the display pcb now.
I've got some upgrades to install on the printer itself (cost peanuts from amazon) - I've fitted uprated springs to the heated glass bed, I've got rubber dampers for the stepper motors to reduce noise, and smoother cards to fit into the main board case that reduce 'jitter' in the stepper motors that drive the print head.
Should make it even better quality (there's loads I could do now to be fair - I've got a modified version of Cura's 'draft' settings running for speed).

It's on the upgrade list!
Did I mention I'm a complete luddite without a bloody clue beyond a career using Ms Office?
