Also got given Colt Express for Christmas. Not the most fun thing to set up, but once we'd done that it was a very enjoyable game to play
Tell me about it - we actually played two 1.5 hour long games - the first involved me putting the game together solo!! Surprisingly well-engineered card though and solid once constructed

I got a couple of new ones recently and a couple of others in a trade.

Braggart - Fun little filler game where you play cards to create a tale about your exploits and other players play cards to change your boast into something less impressive. Funny when your mate boasts about slaying an evil dragon and taking the princess' hand in marriage and you change it to him being attacked by a kitten and soiling his armour smile

The Cave - tile-laying game about exploring a cave system with underground lakes, tight squeezes and wonders to photograph. The main focus is on managing equipment - you have limited space to take supplies (food, oxygen cylinders, rope) with you so you have to make sure you can return to your base camp to get more supplies otherwise you waste turns struggling back. Plays really well, not too thinky and really nice art.

Mythos Tales - More of a cross between Sherlock Holmes, an RPG and a choose your own adventure book. You have a series of mysteries to solve and must visit locations and speak to suspects to try and work out what happened before a certain number of rounds then answer questions. You score based on how many questions you answer correctly minus how many locations you visited more than the chief investigator. Great for lazy nights in with the girlfriend.

Has anyone played Arkham horror? I've had it say in my Amazon basket for a while and read some good things from game reviewers but interested in real world players if anyone has?

Yep. It's one of those where you play the game rather than each other. The game mostly wins. It's interesting, will take a few games to get the hang of it, and also takes a while. 3 hours minimum.

We played it with 4 and both wives got a bit bored after a couple of hours. I enjoyed it though.

We were playing this over Christmas. Really simple and addictive game, quite competitive but doesn't take too long so you can rack up a few rounds or switch teams etc. Enjoyed it.

Assume a few on here have played Dixit, we've played it occasionally for a few years, new people always love it because the card illustrations are so good and the whole thing is quite subjective.

Also got a 2 player game called Patchwork for Christmas but not had time to play it yet. Does anyone know it?

An addictive game with a large amount of strategy involved is Royal Marines Uckers. Many many hours spent playing.

Isn’t uckers originally a Royal Navy game rather than a marines game?

Played Codenames recently which I thought was fun. Dixit I really liked. Also bought Friday (one player card game) which is great for whittling away an hour or so and can be fun with a second person egging you on, and keeping track of the various combos.

Patchwork looks good but not played yet. Interested to hear thoughts!

Probably, there are quite a few varieties of rules too. Passes the time very nicely on ship although its dying off now everyone has a laptop and harddrive. Last trip I did I've never had so many people asking what it was, got them addicted after a few plays though.

So managed to finally get stared with pandemic legacy this week, the Mrs had been avoiding it for the last year as we lost the couple of practice games we had.

Managed to win the first game and second game so already we may be playing March today.

Some colleagues in work were talking about run, fight or die the other day and I like the idea of it anyone else recommend it or a similar dice game?

Also fancy picking up risk legacy as were both fans of risk but can only play the iPad version as you need 3 players. Any similar games that are 2 player?

So an update to my games list:

Carcassonne
Carcassonne dice
Linkee
Ticket to ride, 1910 cards, United Kingdom map
Ticket to ride Europe
Pandemic legacy
Monopoly
Destination
Star munchkin guest artist edition
Exploding kittens

I have also pre ordered Pandemic Legacy season 2 from CGC at Chichester.

Further to my above I missed that risk is 2 players and it was the legacy edition that is 3 players so when I see a copy at a good price I’ll pick up a set.

Star munchkin I haven’t played yet but looks to be a good game, and the same with the carcassonne dice should be good for when travelling.

I’m still on the hunt for a dice based game though.

Can't believe the guys at CGC didn't mention it when I was last there, will be popping in at the weekend to get it ordered.

I contacted them to say would they be offering a preorder so may have started a list? Not sure on release dates yet.

What kind of dice based game?

CCG style game-play: Marvel Legendary. Bah,I meant Marvel Dice Masters
Family-friendly dice chucker: King of Tokyo
Dice placement: Kingsburg or Mission Red Planet

Plenty of dice based games out there dependent on tastes. Check out BBG (Boardgamegeek website) or The Dice Tower for reviews on YouTube (based upon your list - Tom Vasel is a BIG fan of chucking dice).

My own list is similar i.e. family friendly gateway games because my gaming group is my partner, mother and her partner. Also, a friend if our schedules ever coincide.

The great thing about gateway games is the sheer variety out there beyond the usual recommendation of Catan and TTR (have both). Plenty of kid friendly games as well.

My personal choices:
Solo: LoTR LCG (Lord of the Rings Living Card Game as I'm a LoTR fan and also like MTG - deck construction)
2-Player: Twilight Struggle
Multiplayer: PowerGrid

My wants (to play) are:
Euro style: El Grande, Mission Red Planet, Pandemic, Puerto Rico, Shogun
Ameritrash: Arkham Horror & Eldritch Horror, King of Tokyo, Star Trek Fleet Captains
Wargames: Band of Brothers Screaming Eagles, Breakout Normandy, C&C: Ancients, Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage, Holdfast Russia, Paths of Glory, and Virgin Queen

My Little Man (now one year old) sadly precludes board gaming. Struggling to even get LoTR LCG to the table as itching to play The Hobbit Saga Expansion, and Shadows of Mirkwood AP: Hunt for Gollum.

Had a bit of a MTG weekend a couple of weeks back when my mate came to visit, we dropped by an event that was running locally and holy st paper versions of the rare stuff have exploded in value! Makes me glad that I've largely converted over to MTGO now, at least that's vaguely affordable thumbup
MTG: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 scratches my MTG itch. That said, if I were to dip back in it would strictly be Innistrad block.

FWIW, I am divesting my physical cards to a good home: approx 430 from 4th/5th ed, Mirage/Visions/Weatherlight/Tempest. Have list on a cloud-based deckbuilder service that escapes me at present. So if anyone is interested (honour system and all that) let me know.

The above will not include x1 Lion's Eye Diamond: cold, hard cash or a trade (LoTR LCG APs or board games).

Holy thread resurrection, etc.

Popped down to my local game shop at 8pm last night to bag their last copy of Gloomhaven after reading nothing but good things about it recently. Sat down and started to digest the rule book ahead of giving it a first play tomorrow, but only managed to get halfway through before heading up to bed. Thankfully it looks pretty straightforward and there are some useful videos out there on how to play too.

Am also a couple of games into Pandemic Legacy Season 2 with the Wife, but finding a time when we're both in the mood to play after putting our little boy to sleep is the main struggle at the moment, so I've not played as much as I'd like. It's an interesting twist on the usual Pandemic mechanics and looks to have quite a few mysteries to uncover, just like the last one, so I need to get back to that soon.

Anyone else played anything good recently?
