We've been playing loads of the regular game in prep, including getting SiL and her OH involved - they went and bought it after the first game...

Had our first 'month' last weekend. A little confusing at first, with the various stickers/cards/legacy deck etc., but once we started playing it was fine.

Won the first month first time, although I'm now questioning whether we focused too much on cures, and whether we would benefit in the long term by getting the eradication benefits...

Second month is planned for tomorrow!
We found the eradication benefits were really helpful, one of our team was able to cure one of the diseases with only three cards, from anywhere on the board after getting a few of those built up.

Glad you're enjoying it though, and a little jealous that I can't experience it all fresh again.

Quick question Steve, and I'm trying real hard to prevent spoilers!

When you kick off a game by pulling cards from the Legacy deck, the first game is only one card - the objective.

I notice that as the months progress, the number of objectives changes...

Do you get into a situation where you could have more objective cards than you need, or vice versa? Feel free to tell me all will be revealed (perhaps with a rule sticker?) whilst keeping schtum about the detail!

I've got a feeling the story telling aspect is really going to ramp up. Already (after one bloody game!) we're starting to talk outside the game about 'Steve the Medic' and if this were a film what his role/experience would look like, and using that to help us plan strategies...

You will end up tearing up cards and the objectives can change, you might have a pool of five and need to achieve three of them for example. Won't say any more than that, but they did a fantastic job of keeping the game balanced with the funding cards and our season went right down to the wire.

As some of you will be aware, the NSPCC is holding its national Big Boardgame Day on the 27th May and I will be using my favourite hobby to do my bit.

I have got the company I work for to agree to having a pay to play boardgame event on the Friday afternoon during the lunch hour and will be bringing a few social games and asking others to bring in games they would like to play.

For the whole of the weekend starting Friday afternoon and running through to some time Sunday evening, I will be playing all the games I can.
Friday night and Sunday will be at home, playing through the solo games in my collection while Saturday will be spent at Dice & Donuts boardgame cafe in Preston who will be hosting games events between 11am-11pm for the charity.

I will be posting regular updates and pictures throughout the weekend on Facebook and Boardgame Geek.

I have set up a Just Giving page for anyone who wishes to donate.

Paul's Boardgame Weekend

The likely solo games on my list will be:
Apex Theropod Deck-Building Game
Descent: Journeys in the Dark (with the new Road to Legend app)
Dark Darker Darkest
Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island
Snowdonia
Space Cadets: Away Missions
Tiny Epic Kingdoms: Heroes' Call
Tiny Epic Galaxies

and possibly others from my collection

Nobody has mentioned the best recent game yet: Bang!

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3955/bang

I've played this many time, it always have everyone in fits of laughter (just from the terminology of "I'm going to Bang you" hehe ) but it is super addictive and very tense!

Just bought Onward to Venus which was only £10 on Amazon. Sounded like a bit of a sleeper and at only a tenner a bargain (hopefully!). I will update when had a chance to play.

Update on a couple of games we picked up...

Other half got Sushi Go! for her birthday. It's a nice, light card game which plays quickly and has some cute artwork. Our little boy (6) has picked it up quickly and consistently wins. It's good quality cards are a bonus too. The more people playing the better otherwise it's very much a memory game. I'd recommend it.

Onwards to Venus is hard work to set up first time round and the rule book is beautiful but much too long winded. For a tenner the amount, and quality of pieces is exceptional. Once you've played it once it is is simple to play and is like Risk with a bit of Monopoly chucked in. Takes about 20 minutes to set up all the pieces and then around 2 hours for a 2 player game. For the price it's an absolute bargain.

We've also got King of Tokyo on the way. Having not really enjoyed the traditional board games when younger these newer ones seem a world apart in terms of fun and playability.

Also played a friend's copy of Pandemic which I liked but not sure I think it's as good as Forbidden Desert. Maybe a second, less drunken game might change my view!

Oh, and have tried Exploding Kittens which was perfectly fine. Like the card game mechanics but didn't find it as funny as it seemed to think it was.

As a family, we like playing Forbidden Island (same mechanic as desert, different tile logos!) but absolutely love Pandemic.

Key thing is that somehow it's always very, very close - either a narrow win or narrow loss.

Halfway through the Legacy run-through - it's getting very tough!

Playing one we bought my BiL for his birthday at the weekend - can't remember the name but it involves time travel, and was described as 'legacy like' in that you keep resetting from the beginning if you fail, but have learnt from the failure.

Also have finally managed our first proper game of Battlestar Galactica. Lovely presentation, materials, etc. Very high 'first game tax', and the instructions don't help. However after watching a few YouTube vids all was made clear. Great game, very long, but constant accusations of treachery/proteststions of innocence. Superb link to the source material too...

Having played (and loved) Cards against humanity many times, I got a little bored of it, so based on this thread I have just ordered exploding kittens (NSFW version), looking forward to playing it!

Thanks!

The expansions to Pandemic are good. Only had one play through of "Pandemic:On the brink" so far, but playing the bioterrorist is really good, the aim is to sabotage the other players game and you play all your moves on a notepad and only put your character on the board when someone else is in the same city.

Bought Exploding Kittens NSFW the other day but not had a chance to play it yet.

Played King of Tokyo with 6 the other day, having only tried it 2 player before, amusing how different everyone's tactics were on the second playthrough having taken a beating trying to be in the city as much as possible in the first game biggrin

Takenoko's good too, you build the board as you go so every game is a bit different.

Had a bit of a MTG weekend a couple of weeks back when my mate came to visit, we dropped by an event that was running locally and holy st paper versions of the rare stuff have exploded in value! Makes me glad that I've largely converted over to MTGO now, at least that's vaguely affordable thumbup

Bump!

Have recently played Settlers of Catan for first time (I know...) which really enjoyed. Also Seven Wonders Duel which was tricky for a first timer! For xmas we were bought:

The King Is Dead - area control game which I've not played yet. Looks good though, looks like the love child of Pandemic and Risk. Can play 2 or 3 player competitive or 2v2 cooperative which seems a nice twist.

Oh My Goods - similar to Catan but in card format. Enjoyable and requires some thinking, despite the terrible title. Would recommend watching a youtube run through first as the rule book is hard work. Played well with two players, sure it'll scale up nicely.

Lost Cities - 2 player card game which has been around a long time. Not much theme but nice and light although involves some maths to tot up scores at the end.

Anyone else get any goodies for xmas? Am also tempted to pick up Odin's Ravens as it's cheap and another 2 player only fun, filler game - perfect for these dark evenings.

Deep Sea Adventure

It's a super simple game that plays in about a half hour but is excellent and elegant in its simplicity. Recommended!

The King is Dead sounds good, I'll keep an eye out for that.

We gave Pandemic Cthulu to my brother/sister in law, who are our pandemic legacy partners. They bought us the limited edition pandemic based in medieval Spain, can't remember the name as it'll remain unopened until we've finished our Legacy campaign (now on August!). Great minds eh?!

Kids got a few Carcassone expansions, which have added nicely to the game - it's such a good game in the sense the kids can play just themselves, as a whole family, or occasionally just the OH and I.

Oh, and best bud bought me the latest Cards Against Humanity expansions...

Over the break I watched a game of Axis and Allies. That may be getting bought soon...

A mate bought us Tokaido for Christmas. Enjoyable game, the players progress along a road and the next turn is taken by the person at the back so you don't all progress in sequence and blocking other players can be pretty important. By the same designer as Takenoko which is also a great game.

My Mrs bought Lord of the Rings Risk before Christmas, nice feature over standard Risk in that the ring conducts its journey (with some interference by players) and when it gets to Mount Doom the game ends and you total up the points. Still took 5 frigging hours including setting it up!

Bought Dead Last just before Christmas which is a party card game for 6-12 people. You basically all conspire to kill each other off, having to vote along with the group, getting killed yourself if you vote against the majority. Key feature being that if you know everyone is voting for you, you can ambush them and kill one of the majority. Once you've whittled it down to just two people, you get a Golden Balls style vote to see who takes home the score, voting to share results in you both getting half the pot, both voting to steal means you get nothing and everyone else gets a portion, with a few other permutations thereof.

Actually playing it was quite good fun, as you've got to vote for someone subtly without them being aware of it, so holding up their card whilst they're facing the other way, or coming up with a clever play on words is the order of the day, that or waiting until they go to the loo and conspiring to bring them down, as happened to me. Recommended if you've got a few friends coming over and there's no-one overly sensitive to being turned on by their loved ones in the blink of an eye. My Mum showed her true colours by convincing my Sister-in-law that she'd share the pot with her, before turning over the Steal card and taking the whole lot.

Started a similar topic just before Christmas, didn't realise we had a thread going already.

The one I mentioned in there, was Last Word. Quite an easy concept, and involves lots of shouting and so suits me, a loudmouth with an opinion on everything.

but also very funny. Simple concept - everyone has a topic card, a letter is chosen at random from a deck, you have to think of something on your topic before anyone else thinks of something on their topic, and then everyone else has to match your topic with words starting with that letter. There's then a random timer. Last person to speak before the buzzer goes is the winner.

Also got given Colt Express for Christmas. Not the most fun thing to set up, but once we'd done that it was a very enjoyable game to play
