You know what a Walt is, don’t you? wink
Yes, hence the irony.
Never mind.

Same as being stopped on a public right of way. As happened recently to me. I must have been crossing the land of someone relatively wealthy or famous in some way. Some dude in a Defender rolls up and asks me if I know I'm on private land. I say I'm sure it's a bridleway. He says it is a bridleway, but it crosses private land. "Does that mean I can't use it then?" Apparently I'm OK to use it, but must keep to the marked path. Which was impossible at that point because the bridleway crossed an open field with no defined path, and the exit of the field onto the next section of laned off bridleway was out of sight over a hill. So I kept on going, and he crawled along about 30 feet behind me in the Land Rover and when I went through the gate onto the lane he sat in the Land Rover watching until I went out of sight. I've no idea why these clowns do this kind of thing though, because all it does is draw attention to the presence of something or someone that requires security, when before the interaction I had no idea there was anything remotely of interest in the area, and all I wanted to do was get to an off road MTBing trail area without having to ride on the roads and wear out my expensive, soft compound knobbly tyres.
Land registry will tell you the owner if you do not already know who it is and the owner might be interested to learn how ineffective their security people really are. I have little or no idea about it myself but the one thing i have observed is that discreet security is far more effective. Now you know that there is something interesting up there for sure...
I honestly have no interest in who the landowner is. I don't subscribe to the cult of celebrity. And I'm not that fussed about going back that way either. The bridleway in question meets a road and becomes a grubby footpath beyond that. It also leads to a "short cut" that isn't much of a short-cut when you factor in having to wade through the mud and slop caused by equine types and having to heft a MTB over several stiles if you bypass the muddy bridleway on a footpath. So I'll be using the roads around there instead if I go back that way.

Reminds me of when Roger Taylor's "gamekeeper" tried to move me on when I was driving a recce course student a few years ago. The student's task was to recce a potential waterpoint. Mr Taylor's "garden pond" was big enough to appear on the OS map and was adjacent to a public road (albeit little used). The "gamekeeper" took some persuading that the recce was for a notional water point on a planning exercise, and that the Royal Engineers weren't about to arrive with scaffolding towers and industrial pumps to ruin the peace and tranquility of Mr Taylor's guest lodge beside the pond.

I was looking for this thread, I even searched for “Walter Mitty” but couldn’t find it.

I’m seeing loads of reports of these 4x4 heroes with their pretend emergency vehicles, saving the day and driving nurses to hospitals and saving babies and doing all manner of awesome stuff.

Sure I scoffed at the “one eye on the phone” “we go out” blokes but they’ve turned out to be legends.

This is indeed their finest hour

I was wrong to take the Mickey and apologise to you all. You lot have done really useful stuff and most of us who were scoffing, have probably sat back and done f’all to help.

My dad took a nurse to work and picked her up again yesterday in either a Fabia or VW Caddy van. It seems she couldn't get through a snow drift. This dissapoints me somewhat because she always used to be able to get through what ever arctic apocalypse the winter threw at her, but it looks like ages is catching up with her.

Their finest hour indeed, whether they be Peak 4X4 Response who have helped out in Derbyshire or the Army elsewhere. In recent days they all deserve recognition and thanks.

Some of the pictures from Edale MRT here in the Peaks are not dissimilar, and a lot of messages to remind people not to venture out.

She was, by all accounts extremely familiar with the area and very experienced on the hill, albeit slightly visually impaired. She apparently got disorientated (a very easy thing to happen in that weather), called for help and tried to make shelter but hyperthermia took her before she could be found. A sobering lesson when you start feeling a bit gallus.

...And yeah - praise indeed for the guys helping out in these conditions for essential services and stranded people, hat's off - albeit tinged with the feeling we'll be swamped with tales of daring-do down the pub for the next ten years... smile
