There are quite a few Traveller support community groupscharities , even producing magazines-why don't they educate, promote Travellers to be more respectful of their surroundings ? Can't be that hard to start such a campaign ?

Fairly sure that plate belongs to a PHer who may have had a similar login name at one time.

A video of someone being hacked to death, way beyond NSFW.

It is not funny in any way, shape or form.

In fairness it is buried way down the video list and there are numerous advance warnings about it which you have to agree to before it plays so it's entirely one's own fault if they don't like what they see. Out of curiosity what's the backstory to it?

Edit: Found a news article (SFW) : http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-man-hacked-in...

Gang rivalry apparently.

Saw some travellers outside a village in France yesterday. Normal griping from myself and Mrs Puggit. Then noticed their skin colour, proper Olive skinned Romanys...

They'd gone when we returned later in the day. All their rubbish was in wheelie bins at the roadside.

According to the local Traveller charity here (Leeds GATE) it's all the fault of the police, apparently the only cure for this sort of thing is to punish them after they have committed such horrors, raising humans to not be completely disrespectful isn't the issue it seems.

Maybe it is different in Leeds but as has been seen by the camps in Surrey this week the police can't do anything until the councils carry out a "welfare assessment" and then apply to a court to have the "travellers" removed.

Is being a Traveller a self designation thing? Who says they are one?

Good question.

Is it the only opt-in, opt-out racial distinction?

How, when push comes to shove, does one prove one is a member of a protected minority if DNA isn't part of it?

Unfortunately the distinction between a Romany and a traveller is almost impossible to see nowdays.

What's the life expectancy of the travelling community? Aside from the grown men fighting, and grown men doing WWF style videos about fighting, the most common posts seem to be 'RIP this person' who never looks particularly old and are quite often young.

IIRC life expectancy is significantly shorter than UK averages.
Marrying within extended family groups, low useage of medical facilities (particularly for child birth), domestic violence, poor road safety, high rates of smoking and drinking

I remember seeing something very similar and it made me think i'd misheard, but it was something along the lines or late 30's early 40's for the guys. Makes a lot of sense with the lifestyle you've outlined, add to that most being thick as two short planks with a huge % of them being illiterate.

Illiterate - yes. Rates of illiteracy for traveller females is (iirc) much higher than for the men
Thick - not in my experience.

True, you have a point, they do seem to be insanely crafty and have a good amount of wisdom for gaming systems from the rest of the posts and articles in here. I retract them being thick.

Thick but very crafty and streetwise IME. One thing they lack is the notion that anyone can see right through their proposals and MO.

My brother bought a house with a large caravan in the back garden. We broke it up and piled up all the metal plus a load of other junk. I said to him, make sure they take the junk first and come back for the metal if they can't fit it all on in one go. He didn't.

Guess what? They took the valuable metal and were not seen again.
