I went on a local (Portugal) gypsy camp yesterday and removed a pit bull that had been tied up with a bit of electrical cable. Cops were called, they hung around outside while I went in with a couple of other volunteers.

Gypsies less than impressed but not too much they could do really. They get told I'm taking specific dogs and thats it. These are dark skinned romany type rather than Irish Honkeys...

Does she squeek when you touch her?

Might be worth getting her x-rayed.

Nothing much to report, they are enduring the wet conditions. I guess Friday will be the most obvious time for them to move of their own volition now. The woods have been closed to the public due to the health risk.

Saturday saw some quad bike action and our parish councillor put a complaint in to the police.

I did try to warn you this would happen! They will be in cahoots with the landowner to drive the price up for a free stay and a cash bung.

That would be where the new proof of wealth law would be worth its weight in gold.

There are much wealthier neighbours more directly affected. Afraid I'll leave it to them.

How much does a standard sized grazing field on the edge of a village go for? Many refusals for building on in recent history and not earmarked for development by the council.

You’d like to think so but obviously that would be racist. I’d like to see HMRC raid the lot of them and seize anything they can’t produce proof of legitimate funds for i.e. everything.
With regards to Puggits situation, the landowner can basically name his price to prevent him selling it to the travellers. It’s suddenly worth a lot of money, especially in wealthy west berks. I think there should be a law to prevent any landowner selling to travellers as everyone knows they will be in breach of planning laws from day one but again, it will never happen.

What’s the acreage? How much are the neighbouring houses directly next to the field worth?

Round here (west country), values have been pretty flat for many years : £7-8K/acre for decent sized plots which are only suitable for farming. £10k/acre or more for small plots as pony paddocks which adjoin a garden. Find out/work out the size and look at your local newspaper and rural property estate agents to see what has been achieved recently.

I'll measure it on Google maps later. The field sits between 2 villages, one of the primary reasons not to build on it. Houses are worth around 700k to it's west. To the East they are around 600k. Opposite the field is a single house that Zoopla estimates at £2.7m...

Well, that’s the buyer then! Bet you there’s some bad blood between the landowner and Mr 2.7. He has the potential to make that house worthless / unsaleable. He can name his price, the pykes will stay there as long as it takes to get him to pay up. Expect all sorts of shenanigans.

Total field measures approx 500m x 250m , so around 30 acres. It's subdivided in to various plots, so the politics is messy.

2 brothers and a sister own some of it, including the part the travellers are in. Its a big chunk, probably 20 acres.

Owners of the big house moved in last year, so I doubt if there's enough time for trouble - the jungle drums are loud here, and haven't heard anything (parish councillor is in our street).

Man who had the fire in June and fell out with his entire street, and was arrested for obstruction owns one chunk, and apparently he owns the gate too. There in lies the problem, he's been giving the travellers water.

They appear to be 'local' travellers, daughter's friend says the kids are at school, in her class. There is a big permanent camp on another edge of the village, about a mile from the field. Hence there are no pubs in a village of around 4500.

The problem is most people play too nicely.

The neighbour / landowner could be very quickly convinced of the error of their ways and that dealing with travellers is too much trouble.

As it is I bet they get away with it and even keep all their windows.

Big money then. The Algerians are sounding like a bargain!

The greenbelt land on the link below, is reportedly been purchased by the travelling community, the same for nearly twice the reserved price £133k, and not just an isolated incident apparently.

There's been much burning, hooting and shouting today - neighbour just told me they've gone, but I haven't seen with my own eyes.

Police used their powers to move them on due to weight of evidence against them of antisocial behaviour.
