We are generally well-served with car threads on PH, with Bargain Basement at Shed budget, Retro 0-5, Barge 1-5, Barge 5-20, and the OT/Anything Goes threads, but the sweet spot of 5-10 seems to me to be a gap. The latter two threads tend to the upper ends of the price spectrum, and 5-20 is in any case too wide a budget, which perhaps accounts for its unloved feel.

As a consequence, I wonder if there's a gap in the market for a 5-10 budget for interesting cars? The entry criteria are deliberately vague to encourage diversity - it's a broad church after all - but I've shown a few examples to start this thing off which reflect my personal preference for petrol autos.

What else out there do you like?

Dodgy colour match, but pop-up lights and timeless style. £6750.

Feeling brave? BMW 3-series or Maserati? £7950.

Looks virtually new. £9450.

Or this wonderful old thing? £6750.

That Spyder is a wonderful thing, probably financially ruinous, but still, "let's take the Maserati" has a lovely ring to it.

Funny I was looking at that ad for that Maserati the other day - I was looking for a 4200.

To have exotic and thrusting sounding names attached to it - 'Maserati' 'Bi-Turbo' 'Spyder' & 'Zagato' the car itself is a bit of a letdown - having said that I do like them!

The Maserati certainly has an appeal.

I think the S500 is pricey, but what presence!

He he, I was only being bold. It feels like this is a very relevant price range/thread. Does that mean the 5-20K thread needs to be renamed? I only go on it occasionally but it seems to be too broad a range....someone who's looking at something around the 17-20k mark, probably isn't going to be interested in people discussing stuff at 5K....in my opinion.

Well, that'll be up to the few who actually do frequent it, if and when it ever rolls over to require a new thread after hitting the post limit. It seems pretty much tumbleweed central anyway these days, so I don't think the question really arises in practical terms.

LR Defender 90....not fussed about the LPG but I do like the sound of a 5.9 V8. I've always liked the idea of having one of these for commuting/driving round town. I think this one needs a few quid to get it right and I'm not sure about the Q plate, although these days, you don't see many of them (Q plates) about.

A Q plate probably shouldn't deter one. But it does.

Anyone know much about these? This one is at the top of the price range but it's a very late example, a 4.2 rather than a 4.0, and low mileage. I like the colour too. The shape has grown on me over the years.

Not technically a barge however the 5.9v8 IMO is adequate credentials. That must be quite something ina straight line.

I was looking at these before I got my CLS, in the right colour and wheel combo they look stunning, a BRG one pulled into the pub the other day and it looked great.

Rust can be an issue as can that old thing about the Cam chain tensioners but most will be sorted, they arent all that fast unless you get the XKR but they arent slow either, lots of doggy ones about, I looked at a couple and then decided it was perhaps a little bit Golf Club, but then the merc is as well.
