Office heating/cooling is a nightmare. For the reasons stated above. It's amazing how 99% of any office will freely accept that with a large mix of fellow workers that the general temperature needs to be a sensible average that will suit as many people as possible. But there is always a Janet. Janet is always an unproductive worker. She is a complainer. Janet is always riddled with diseases. Janet cannot stop talking incessantly to as many people as possible about her legion of diseases and complaints. Janet is also one of those low functioners who when not using her voice box to complain about something or explain the intricacies of her latest rash will use it to recount dull and pointless tales based around a previous conversation that no one was interested in them either: 'she said this and then I said that and then she said this.

When a 'Janet' is able to reach a thermostat then everyone else in the office is fked because the world revolves around a Janet and Janets need to inconvenience as many people as possible so that they feel better.

The key to a happy office environment is to ensure that the thermostat is located in the office of the lady who has a serious hard on for her career and who has a natural contempt for 'Janets'. Failing that the only solution is to tip the Janet out of the window that the moron has opened due to the aircon making the working environment bearable for everyone else. But there are health and safety issues when it comes to defenistrating Janets and it's important to follow the lifting instructions on that laminated workplace poster as Janets are always heavy units.

Luckily most offices in London now have windows that don't open and centralised temperature controls meaning that Janets can do nothing other than ramping up the tales of skin issues and 'he said, she said' banal drivlings.
Just imagine the problem in a big office when you have Janet x 6. Each of them with different ailments, tolerance levels, temperature needs etc.

Put it on? I don’t understand this, do people actually go to their heating and turn a switch in and off depending on whether they are cold, or depending on the date?

Ours has a wonderful device called a thermostatic switch. It senses the surrounding temperature, as set by the owner, and if the air drops below that temperature it activates the heating system, once the temp gets up to a certain temperature it turns the heating off.

I don’t think there is a date setting, but I’m not that smart and can’t understand the complexities of the device fully.

I set it to 19c when we moved into the house in January, and I still think 19 is a good minimum temperature to be at, regardless of the date, season, or the cycle of the moon.

If there had been a mini ice age in the middle of the night in July, I would not have noticed, as the heating would have come on.

Don't talk to me about office temps, it drives me mad.

We moved into our new office recently and we have large, south-facing windows which, even with solar blinds, seem to function like heat radiators. The temperature on that side of the office is always hot and always feels 'fuggy'. I set the AC on this side to 21deg to cool it down from what must be 25+. Within half an hour there are incessant complaints from the other side of the office that it's too cold. One of them even has a fan heater running under her desk the whole day. It is NOT cold over that side of the office but it is extremely hot on our side.

I now have a fan running to try and cool things down which seems like complete lunacy when we have AC which provides crisp, gorgeous chilly air. We've even angled the vents straight down on the 'opposite side' to stop the units firing cold air across to 'their' side.

I don't get how setting it to something like 21 or 22 and leaving it to automatically maintain that temperature is anything other than acceptable!

Try working on a ship, where the chief engineer is Norwegian and loves being hot. All the accommodation is about 2degrees too hot for comfort. Trying to sleep in a cabin with no opening window, no fan, no air flow at all. Just plain miserable.

Funny enough, yes. Was sat with the patio doors open the other evening, and heard the thermostat click on and the boiler Start up. About 20 mins later I realised why, the thermostat had dropped below 20 degrees!

When the patio doors have been open it’s been quite nippy in the evening but when closed the house is warm.
Need to set up my Tado thermostat before the place needs heating up.

Sort of the opposite this Summer, I've had the air con running nearly every night but tonight and last night has been the first time the a/c is off for weeks. A sign of a good summer.

Going back to the discussions about workplace temperature, we're very lucky in that we have an experimental graduated temperature in the office. We work in an office that's about twice the size it needs to be for the amount of people in it, so what we've done is set the a/c to heat on one side, and dropped each block by a degree until it's 24/7 chill on the other side. Most folks tend to gravitate in the middle area and if they get too hot or cold, just need to pick up their laptop and move one desk north or south. Actually works really well and is quite useful for when you've been on the hangar floor running around as you can sit in the icebox for a few minutes to cool off, and then work your way back to civilisation.

We've had quite a few complaints about our girl on reception, however. She doesn't appear to understand temperatures and the benefits of air conditioning. If you had a room where your desk was directly under the air con vent, you'd probably either move your desk or change the vent angle. She's decided to just disable the air con in reception. So when we have visitors, sat in a glass room in the sunshine, wearing a full suit, they cook. Meanwhile receptionist girlie is sat in a short dress with two floor fans pointed at her and doesn't understand why the men always complain. Her contract is up for renewal next month and nobody is willing to sign her back.

You need to sack the cretin who is responsible for the receptionist, not the receptionist.

It isn’t the fault of the monkey but the monkey’s handler. The monkey is just the monkey. There is a reason why the monkey is sitting where it is sitting and you simply cannot blame the monkey for not understanding how air con works or not appreciating the importance of keeping clients comfortable.

Everything that you have described is the fault of the monkey handler. That person has failed to train, control, manage their staff. It is that person who is taking money under false pretences and not doing their job. You need to be getting rid of them.
