Can someone explain this, is it a thing? If so it seems to have passed me by completely.

We've done it for the first time this year thanks to m-i-l buying one. So far the elf has left a note on the bathroom mirror, made a mess making a cookie, hung from the tree, played nerf with Woody, written rude(ish) words on the Scrabble board and my favourite which I set up last night, a zipline in the kitchen.

Running out of ideas now.

Same here.

Hoping it's not some American thing that's crossed over the Atlantic.

It's not too tricky to understand you grumpy gits.

You have a toy elf. At night it comes alive and does stuff. That's pretty much it.

A long with Santa, the tooth fairy, the boogeyman and the Easter bunny.

We have a slightly different take on this.

Our elves (we have 2 - Tinsel and Love) are good elves and leave messages and little rewards for good behaviour passed rather than threaten for good behaviour to come.

That's a good idea. Ours just does stuff at night. No good or bad reporting.

Not really a grump (not much anyway) just never heard of it, so I asked.

Want to make kids behave in the run up to Christmas?
Wrap up some boxes filled with bits of wood as Christmas presents and put them under the Christmas tree. Every time a child misbehaves, put one on the fire.

I get the idea of putting them on the fire as the threat of which would certainly make the kids behave, but what's with the earlier bit about wrapping up bits of wood?

Never heard of this before, thankfully.
Don't need elves though, we have two dogs that can cause much more mess overnight.....

The kids will undoubtedly be picking the boxes up and shaking them to try and guess what's in them, so an empty box won't work. Wood makes the package more credible and is combustible.

Well i'm either council or a middle class wker - be great if that could be cleared up.

Any of you lot got young children, or ever had contact with one by the way? For some reason I suspect not.....

Young kids here, elves just muck about, daft poses etc, no behavioural threats or rewards, kids look forward to coming down in the morning and see what they are up to. The other day the Elves were hanging from the lounge lights on running medals. I kept moving them around when no one was in the room; young daughter loved it, don't see any harm in it whatsoever.

Never shared a pic of them (although sure the wife uses this for ideas). It's just an extra bit of Christmas magic before they grow old and become miserable PHers.
