The Paddies in Luton would often be on the lash, wearing a rose in their lapel, wonding what was wrong with us English for being so dumb as to miss the opportunity for a good piss up.

My only thought on this day is for my grandad, born this day in 1920 and died in 1989, also called George !

I am not religious and dont have many opinions of saints, patron or otherwise, it is an opportunity or the hard of brains to tell us how "Proud" they are of an accident of birth, its a nice change for them from "I hate P***s", one chap today was telling us how he is of a warrior race, English "Born and Bred" etc etc etc, a few days ago he put a picture of some refugees on a raft, alongside it was a picture of a hand holding a pin saying "Would you", i.e. would you pop the life raft, and amazing how many were keen to condemn 30 or so folk to certain death because they werent white basically, they didnt have any background to base the decision on, just good old fashioned racism and the assumption they are coming here to spoil Christmas or whatever.

I enjoy living in this country, despite the moaning we have it good, other countries offer good or better, many are much, much worse, but the daft pride thing annoys me as the folk that spout it are usually a bigger part of the problem than those they are moaning about.

I rarely bother to point it out when people say "proud to be English" or "proud to be Scottish" or recently "proud to be a West Midlander" etc

But I still don't understand the pride - being born isn't an achievement. You have no control of where it happens. I was born in the West Midlands, by total happenstance as far as my input was concerned.

O/T but I cringe when they show pearly kings as English culture, it may be east London culture but it is most certainly not English culture.

Having a national day which celebrates a notable day in your countries history is a good idea, having one celebrating someone who nothing to do with your country is a bit silly, no wonder hardly anyone bothers with it.

I agree Jimmy, but while I cannot justify being proud to be English, sometimes I have been ashamed to be so when I see the behaviour of (some of) my countrymen.

Well, here in Singapore I went out to have a Pint and celebrate St Georges day, thought that would be an easy task as everywhere from Chinese KTV club to 5 star restaurant to indian curry house was toing a St Paddys promotion a few weeks ago ......

Went through 4 well known boozing neighbourhoods offering all sorts of sunday afternoon one for one offers etc, but not a sign of St George, or his cross anywhere, until finally I got to "The Penny Black" on boat quay ... good on them ... even if they did serve my Toad In the Hole with French beans!!!!

but I did get a nice pint of Speckled Hen!

There was a good parade in Bradford yesterday (as always) organised by the local Scout groups, complete with marching band.

Well, this old perennial chestnut.

If Jeremy Corbyn gets elected in we'll get extra days of on St George's, St Andrew's, St David's and St Patrick's Day - I mean that's got to mean something - hasn't it?

The reason no one really cares, in general, outside of boy scouts and football hooligans is because it's a load of old nonsense. He never killed no dragon, never worked no miracles and certainly never came to England, he was just some old Lebanese martyr or other. St Edmund was the original patron saint of England - also tortured to death by heathens... I mean at some point we're just going to have to let this go and admit it's all very silly, for heavens sake - when the AI comes on line we really need to convince it that we're over this stuff or it'll quite rightly start removing decision making from our daft hands altogether.

Getting massively blinged up and poncing about like a tit is most certainly English culture these days. The only difference with the Pearlies is that they don't dress up like Jimmy Saville and invade shopping centres to buy stuff they don't need with money they don't have. biggrin

And frankly, even Savilling around the shops makes more sense than paying homage to a Turk who clearly didn't do what he is supposed to be famous for doing and was introduced to England by a genocidal turd of a Frenchman. smile
